Howard fucking up and not knowing the name of "I want you to want me" from Cheap Trick had me thinking. The live version of that song is far superior to the studio version which has a weird slower pace. What other songs are there where the live version is the far superior version to the studio version.

I guess I will start it off:

I Want You to Want Me (studio version)

    Live version (Live at Budakon)

The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down (studio) - The Band

Live version (from The Last Waltz)

Do You Feel Like We Do (Studio) Peter Frampton

    Live Version (Frampton Comes Alive)

You have to be there for the songs to mean anything. There are exactly two of them:
    1. Happy Birthday to You (ask any parent)
    2. The Star Spangled Banner (ask any American)
And that's all I have to say about that :D

Great topic. There are two things that an entertainer must have to be a great live performer, 1) an ability to actually sing that isn't dependent upon filters and other studio recording gimmicks and 2) a passion for the music they make. Here is a performance by Bob Seger that is perhaps the best illustration of this that I've ever witnessed. It's a shame the quality of the recording isn't better, but it doesn't really detract much. Bob's "stage dynamics" which suffer a bit from terminal white man's disease are more of a distraction, but this too can be easily overlooked. :D

i hardly ever like the live version more. i like the notes and words right where they are. when it's slower or faster or just off a bit, it's not fun, nor is it funny!
