With apologies to @LaserTilt, here's a stab at a historical thread featuring the Italian liner, SS Andrea Doria, that sunk off the coast of Nantucket on July 25, 1956.

A few of us Shedders (@MadWoman777 & @RTB) hijacked the Hindenburg thread, and I thought it would be a good idea to get something going on what was once a beautiful ship, and a really challenging scuba dive.

I worked with a guy back in 71' who's family booked passage on that ship but then changed their mind and flew to the U.S.

Back in the day some shyster talked my granddad into investing money in raising the ship, but my grandmother smartly wouldn't let him.

This is frankly a disappointing reply WIFE from your typical ones. Where's the sex take, the story?! What happened?
Usually a more typical response would be
Back in the day some shyster talked my grandad into investing in raising the ship, I heard the conversation while a hooker was blowing me in the bathroom. I came twice

Here's the Stockholm after the wreck
    [IMG]

Amazingly, the MS Stockholm is still afloat and sailing today as the MV Azores (soon to be renamed the MV Astoria)

I guess it's real easy to get disoriented and lost in wrecks, in addition to getting your gear snagged on wires and cables down there (that can be hard to see).

I'm naturally kind of clumsy and not a good swimmer, so I'm sure that my first wreck dive would also be my last!

I still think about getting my scuba certification though...they've got some pretty deep swimming pools here in Phoenix!

When I worked for Ford, I had a credit union account based out of Dearborn, Michigan that I kept for a long time after I had left the company. They used to have these inserts that would come with the monthly statements from time to time about saving for college and retirement, etc., but they'd also feature these neat profiles of members that were doing interesting things.

Anyway, they had an article one time about a credit union member that used to dive the wrecks in the Great Lakes. These wrecks are damn near pristine, because they are in deep, cold, fresh water, and the wood/metal etc. doesn't deteriorate as fast as it does in salt water. Anyway, the guy said he was diving a wreck of some ship that went down in the 1920s, I believe, and he was in the galley when he felt a presence there. He turned around, and in the corner, was the corpse of the cook floating above him, pretty well preserved (allegedly, there are preserved corpses of the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald floating around inside of her wreck as well; "Superior, it's said, never gives up her dead")

That would have freaked me the fuck out and I would've probably lost it right then and there!

Today, when I was reading about the Andrea Doria, I came across a site that listed the deaths and bios of the divers that dove on the wreck. One dude that bought the farm while diving the Andrea Doria wreck was an avid and experienced diver from Michigan. I wonder if it's the same guy that belonged to that credit union?

    http://dferg.net/AndreaDoria/doria.htm

Diving that wreck (and especially finding dishware from First Class) is like climbing Everest for some of these guys...

I took a tour of this wreck a couple years ago. You can rent a 5-person submarine and pilot for about $3000.
