J.J. Abrams' record-shattering blockbuster achieved the historic milestone Wednesday after only 20 days in release. Globally, 'Force Awakens' is a long way from matching the $2.78 billion earned by 'Avatar.'

It's official: J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the highest-grossing film of all time in North America, not accounting for inflation.

On Wednesday, the Disney and Lucasfilm mega-blockbuster overtook the $760.5 million earned by James Cameron's Avatar. Force Awakens — which grossed $8 million on Tuesday for a domestic total of $758.2 million — will have achieved the milestone in only 20 days in release, a remarkable feat.

Released in December 2009, Avatar grossed nearly $750 million in its original, seven-month run, plus another $10 million-plus when it was rereleased in theaters.

Thanks to Force Awakens, domestic revenue for 2015 hit a record $11 billion at the last minute. The movie has broken numerous records, including biggest domestic opening ($247.9 million), biggest global debut ($529 million), fastest film to reach $100 million (24 hours), $200 million (three days), $300 million (five days), $400 million (eight days), $500 million (10 days), $600 million (12 days), and $700 (16 days)

Finally saw it after all the hype.

Had never seen a Star Wars before.

I was bored. Spaceships zipping around haphazardly and firing lasers. Storm Trooper dudes who wear armor but get killed every time they are hit by a shot. Harrison Ford sleepwalking through the movie. Carrie Fisher looking incredibly uncomfortable. Cornball plot devices (a super weapon that drains the sun to get its power?). The guy from Girls as a whining insecure villian.

    Lost on me. Sorry.

You should always start watching an ongoing franchise with its seventh chapter. Only way to do it right.

Avatar was innovative , James Cameron had to advance technology with ideas to bring that story to the big screen...
J.J. put up some green screen in Europe and filmed a sequel ...

Would Harrison Ford have been better if I had watched the others? Would all the lame dialogue and ridiculous battles been better?

What you saw is what Star Wars is. It's not for everybody.

Disagree strongly. The new Star Wars, while certainly better than the 3 prequels, was still terrible.

Horrible dialogue, people using a lightsaber on the first try like they are seasoned jedis, people using the force like any old mother fucker with a lineage is a master after 6 hours, and a truly mind numbingly bad villain.

Oh and not to mention nothing original, just rehashing the old one in a much shittier way.

Avatar is over hyped crappy movie. Another movie that came in 2009 with aliens with similar premise, District 9. 100times better than Avatar
