I do remember him talking about it quite a bit, but I don't think he was ever specific. When the divorce became public, I figured it was about Alison & the demise of their relationship but I probably gave him too much credit for having a heart instead of his internal abacus.

All I remember him saying was how much the BB King portion of the song "moved" him.

The part of the song he obsessed over was the BB King sample in the refrain: "I've been downhearted, baby, I've been downhearted, baby..."

In retrospect, probably makes sense that he fixated on that, since he was in the midst of ruining his marriage?

IIRC Howard was having one of those "this song really makes me sad and depressed and I love to wallow in it" moments that nobody could share with him. Robin just laughed or something. Kind of like the time Howard purposely played (I think) Johnny Cash's NIN cover "Hurt" knowing Beth would come into the room soon just to get some kind of sympathy from her for getting depressed over it and she saw through the bullshit.

    Marks Friggin:

Songs That Make The Staff Cry. 05/20/13. 8:50am

Howard said he put down two songs. He said that the BB King singing in Primitive Radio Gods ''Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand'' really gets him. Howard said he doesn't like this song one bit but the BB King part gets to him. Howard said he's heard the actual song, ''How Blue Can You Get'' but that doesn't get him like this song does. Howard said the rest of this song sucks but the way they included it in the song really gets him.

Howard said Beth caught him listening to this song that makes him sad. He said she asked him why he was listening and he said he needed to wallow in sadness. He said he just needed to do it. Howard said he wants to feel something. Robin said he could feel happy. Howard said he wants to feel sadness. He said that the song is ''Hurt'' by Trent Reznor with Johnny Cash. Howard said he was listening to the Johnny Cash version when Beth caught him. Howard said she thought he was nuts and walked out of the room when he told her why he was listening.

Howard said that the theory is that the song was about a heroin addict. Howard played the song and told Robin where it gets him. He said Beth walks in happy swinging a picnic basket and he's all upset.

Howard said the BB King song from that other song isn't as good when it's played on its own. Howard played that for Robin too. Robin said he's right. She said they need that other goofy stuff to go along with it.

Can someone tell me why I should care about a Howard conversation that took place a decade ago about a song Howard liked two decades ago, which, based on what we know about Howard, was probably scripted, whitewashed bullshit?

Howard's show has the shelf life of a funnel cake. It doesn't hold up after 5 minutes, let alone two decades ago.
