A cruel, greedy, selfish monster: A peace-loving visionary? No, argues a blistering book. John Lennon was a nasty piece of work who epitomised our age of self-obsession
    • John Lennon was placed seventh in a list of the greatest Britons of all time
    • BBC poll in 1999 declared lyrics to his song 'Imagine' the nation's favourite
    • Despite his image as a man of the people, Dominic Sandbrook argues that Lennon's only driving thought was: 'We, me, me'
    • Even his biographers struggled to 'justify his cruel streak, his eagerness to sneer at anybody different,' Sandbrook writes in his new book

I've never understood the popularity of the Beatles. McCartney could write a pleasant melody, I won't deny that, but that doesn't explain the popularity of the group.

George was probably the nicest of the 4. He did a lot a selfless things after the Beatles including raising money for Bangladesh. Remember Lennon introduced Yoko to Paul.

You are right. His song "1 down 3 to go" is a classic.

I read Lennon's biography. He had a fucked up childhood. Both mom and dad bailed on him when he was born, so he had to live with his cunty aunt. His uncle was the only grown-up who was cool to him I think. Then when he was a teenager his mom came back into his life, but then she got run over by a drunk off duty cop and killed. I think Brian Epstein's dying fucked him up too.

Read "Get Back" chronicling the Let It Be sessions to get a sense of the Beatles personalities at the end. Lennon had Yoko buy his side, both doing heroin. George was miserable, tired of John and Paul not treating his songwriting abilities seriously. Paul was like someone in a bad marriage trying to keep everything together. Ringo was like Wiggy...the least talented person in the room

I read that article. Fuck 'em. Lennon never claimed to be a saint. I don't see the point in denigrating his memory decades after he was killed by some government programmed psycho.
