FM News 101.9 in New York (the station Steve Langford left H100 News for) has just changed their format to alternative rock. Steve surely has lost his job there, wonder where he'll wind up? He was one of the only H100 News guys I enjoyed listening to, mainly because he didn't come off as such a kiss-ass.

not suprising at all. howard said when he left that quiting a radio job with a guaranteed paycheck for 5 years was stupid. i remember everyone on sfn saying how smart he was to leave a sinking ship. hope he finds another job though.

If he could get a mainstream job in TV he would have never worked for H100 News.

hmm..they are going to "alternative rock". i give them a year.

why would a rock station limit its scope? rock stations get bad enough ratings as it is.

can't they just play a blend of new and old stuff, alternative and classic, hard rock, some punk rock, etc etc?

Stupid move by 101.9. Don't they know that rock is going the way of jazz? Howard has told us all this.

much more expensive to pay news people and producers than to just play music. i don't think the DJs at music stations are live anymore so they dont have to pay them much.

    ------------

Merlin CEO Randy Michaels said in an announcement, "Effective immediately, Alternative is back on the air in New York as New Rock 101.9 and Adult Hits are on the air in Chicago as i101. It was a difficult decision to make, but after a year of minimal audience engagement, coupled with the format’s inherent expense, I felt it was time to make a change.. I’d like to thank the people who poured their heart and soul into the effort and I wish them all the best."

"After a year without Alternative in New York, I expect to see the audience rapidly embrace New Rock 101.9," added Jim Richards, WEMP/WIQI Interim OM. "The market is wide open and the listeners are passionate for this type of music. Chicago's current competitive market matrix creates an incredible opportunity for Adult Hits and i101 is the ideal weapon for the battle."

Following the high-profile acquisition of both stations from Emmis last year, and launch of the FM News format, the two stations struggled in the ratings. In the June PPM Arbitron ratings, WEMP had a 0.6 share for Persons 6+, the same rating it had stood at for three months in a row. In Chicago, WIQI had a 0.3 rating for Persons 6+ last month, and hovered in the 0.3-0.4 range in recent months.
