I remember exactly where I was when I heard of his death.
At first it was not even confirmed yet whether or not he was on the helicopter that went down. At that point they were trying to confirm the whereabouts of Eric Clapton and Robert Cray, too. If I remember correctly, for a while they thought Cray went down as well but it was his tech, maybe?
My pops, my brother and myself were at our cabin and the ol' man would always get up early and start cooking bacon and listen to NPR. I could hear the radio from the kitchen out on the covered porch and I think the tone of the reporters voice stirred me, or maybe it was hearing SRV's name.
I lay there and listen for a few, then get up and go into the kitchen and pops was just sitting there looking at the radio shaking his head.
There ya go.
I had just started high school and one of my teachers had a picture of one of his students with SRV and I thought cool and then it was a day or two later is when I heard that he had been killed in that helicopter crash. I was getting ready for school that day, kind of put a damper on that day cause I sent to school in the area where SRV lived.
gilaet's link died , But I love "Little Wing's" version with SRV.
This is the first song from Stevie that i heard on the radio in the 80's and was in awe of this guitar coming out of the radio , In a world of "Flock of Seagulls" and "A-Ha" on the stations i was thinking "This is the second coming of Jimmy and the rebirth of rock and roll".
