Target Corp. is pulling the plug on its ailing Canadian operations.

The U.S. retail giant announced Thursday it has filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, the equivalent of Chapter 11 proceedings in the United States.

The move affects more than 130 stores and some 17,600 employees.

“When I joined Target, I promised our team and shareholders that I would take a hard look at our business and operations in an effort to improve our performance and transform our company,” said Target chief executive Brian Cornell.

“After a thorough review of our Canadian performance and careful consideration of the implications of all options, we were unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021.”

    Breaking news!
The Canadian Targets really sucked compared to US ones.
Small stores, jacked up prices, no selection.... and weird brands I've never heard of or some same brands that were found in Zellers!
I was excited for the grand opening... and so disappointed that it was nothing like the USA version :bigcry:

That's what happens when you try to sell people on a product that is a fraction of what your classic product was. People tell you to fuck off. Right, Howie???

"The cop noticed Winslow was wearing "dark colored" sweatpants and wrote that "his genitals were not exposed." But the cop also noticed "two open containers of Vaseline on his center console" and plastic bags marked "Mr. Happy" and empty plastic containers of "Funky Monkey" scattered throughout the vehicle."

TWO jars of Vaseline. Boy these rich athletes do everything to excess.

The last time I went to one in upstate NY, they had added raw fruits/veg (to compete with Walmart supercenter?) and seemed to have less other stuff.

Target Canada is closing up shop. Target said Thursday that it will begin winding down its Canadian operations, which include 133 stores that employ 17,600 people.

The Minneapolis-based company said it reviewed its Canadian subsidiary's performance and concluded that it would not be profitable until 2021.

"This was a very difficult decision, but it was the right decision for our company," said Target CEO Brian Cornell.

The second-largest U.S. retail chain, Target (TGT) has struggled in the Canadian market for years. The company expects to report a loss of about $5.4 billion in the fourth quarter, driven largely by Target Canada's poor performance.

Despite its problems in Canada, Target's U.S. business remains strong. Target said U.S. sales and earnings will be better than expected in the fourth quarter, thanks to strong holiday sales and online shopping.
