An Ozen High School teacher was arrested today for assaulting a student after a video of her repeatedly slapping a student in the back of the head was posted to Twitter. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Mary Hastings was arrested today on one charge of assault and posted a $2500 bond. The Beaumont Independent School District has confirmed that the teacher was arrested for physically assaulting a student. According to a statement from BISD Special Assistant to the Superintendent Nakisha Myles Burns the conduct was substantiated by video viewed by BISD police and administrators. The teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave pending action on her contract according to the statement. The statement also said the district is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students and that BISD does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct.
