A high school teacher in Tuscaloosa County was arrested this morning, accused of being sexually involved with a student. Katherine Nelson, 29, an English teacher at Brookwood High School, is charged with a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19, according to Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ron Abernathy. The relationship, according to sheriff's investigators, happened during the 2012-2013 school year. The charge against Nelson involves a male student. School officials notified authorities this week, and Nelson was interviewed by detectives on Monday. A warrant was obtained, and she turned herself in to authorities this morning. She already has been released on bond. "At this time, the investigation has not shown any evidence to indicate that any other students or teachers are involved in the alleged incident," according to a sheriff's office press release. A representative of the superintendent's office at Tuscaloosa County Schools said they couldn't comment on the Nelson arrest because it is a personnel matter. She declined to say whether Nelson is still employed at the high school. According to the school's website, Nelson teaches English, musical theatre, and coaches golf and cheerleading. She wrote this about herself: "I am so thrilled to be teaching at BHS! I attended Brookwood schools from kindergarten until I graduated from Brookwood High in 2004. It is an honor for me to return as a teacher. I appreciate this school and community so very much. Both of my parents are educators, and I strongly believe that played a role in how I got a passion for teaching and a love for students. I graduated from the University of Alabama in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, English/Language-Arts, and began teaching at Brookwood High School in the Fall of 2009. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else! I married Mattie Nelson in October of 2007, and we now live in Tuscaloosa. Mattie and I are very active in our church, Ridgecrest Baptist. I enjoy dancing, reading, cooking, traveling, and watching sports. I love Alabama Football! ROLL TIDE! I am excited to spend this year with our great students and faculty at BHS!" Nelson is not the first Brookwood teacher charged with sexual involvement with a student. Joe Bradley Petrey was charged with "school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 years" in August, 2015.
