Teacher blames "bad habit" for being late 111 times
    [IMG]
TRENTON, N.J. -- An elementary school teacher who was allowed to keep his job despite being late for work 111 times in two years said Friday that breakfast is to blame for his tardiness.

"I have a bad habit of eating breakfast in the morning and I lost track of time," 15-year veteran teacher Arnold Anderson told The Associated Press.

In a decision filed Aug. 19, an arbitrator in New Jersey rejected an attempt by the Roosevelt Elementary School to fire Anderson from his $90,000-a-year job, saying he was entitled to progressive discipline. But the arbitrator also criticized Anderson's claim that the quality of his teaching outweighed his tardiness.

He was late 46 times in the most recent school year through March 20 and 65 times in the previous school year, the arbitrator said.

Anderson said he was one to two minutes late to school "at the most" but was prepared and was never late for class.

"I have to cut out eating breakfast at home," he said Friday.

On Thursday, Anderson told CBS New York station WCBS-TV that nearly all the instances of tardiness happened during an unwritten grace period for teacher arrivals in the few minutes before classes begin.

"You clock in, there's a long line and stuff like that, so you have a three-minute window," Anderson said. "In the two years, I was late more than 10 minutes only once, and I mean, you know, my car broke down."

Anderson remains suspended without pay until Jan. 1.

A message seeking comment was left Friday with the school superintendent's office.

The arbitrator found that the district failed to provide Anderson with due process by not providing him with a formal notice of inefficiency or giving him 90 days to correct his failings before terminating his employment.

Gov. Chris Christie referenced the case in a tweet on Friday.

Think I'm too tough on the teachers union? This is what we're dealing with in NJ . . . https://t.co/kXubGMO669

Anderson said he was "very upset" to be suspended but conceded that losing his job would have been worse.

When he returns to school in January, "I will be early," he said.

BPT is probably written in the union contract.

My wife is a teacher and let me tell you unions wreck it for them imo

They protect weak inebt incompetent teachers based solely on tenure, fact. They will fire three or four young energetic kids because they have to keep the most tenured, burnt out, don't give a shit teachers. Who now give even less of a shit because their class load went up 20 percent. Had the kept the three superstar teachers this never would of happened

All day long, twice on Sunday this happens. It is the most fucking insane agreement I have ever seen. PLUS the old teachers fucking work the system with overtime, weekly "sick days" and apathy.

We have agreed to no longer talk about to I get so mad AND she's a member of the union so I have a vested interest in this and I still think they suck

Not only did he not care to show up on time, but he's gonna rub it in that he was late because he had breakfast, unlike his students.

It's easy to blame the union, but,

Late 111 times? Why the fuck didn't MANAGMENT do something sooner?

If the arbitrator found the school board didn't follow proper procedure, isn't that THEIR fault?

Late 20 times, write the fucker up, he's warned.

He keeps being late, hit him again, he gets time off, hopefully the max.

He still keeps pulling this shit, hit him again, he's gone.

And it's probably not just the union contract, it's also the state civil service rules.

Don't tell me the school board and management doesn't know exactly how to go about handling this, they do. Just because they are either too incompetent or lazy to follow thru with the way the rules are written, doesn't mean they get to lose and wring their hands and cry woe is me, the all powerful teachers union beat us up.

    Bullshit

Soon being blaek will be seen as a disability and CPT will be a disorder

It is just baffling that someone is given 110 warnings and keeps doing the same thing.
