It’s no secret that nobody likes Ted Cruz.. He’s an arrogant, self-important elitist who believes he speaks for God himself. His face is one of the most punchable on the planet and his screechy voice makes you cringe with disgust. When he starts on one of his “righteous” rants you can’t help but hope a light fixture falls on his head, leaving him forever incapable of speaking.

Donald Trump wasn’t kidding when he said that everyone in congress hates Ted Cruz. Cruz refuses to deal or compromise within his own party, nevermind across the aisle. A Cruz presidency would be nothing short of a disaster for this country.

That’s today’s perspective. Today, we know all about the whiny toddler that is Ted Cruz. But what about his past? Is he somehow new to the idea of being hated? According to an article in Mother Jones, apparently not:

A prominent aide to George W. Bush’s 2000 campaign could barely contain himself when we asked him to discuss Cruz, who worked in the campaign’s policy shop. This person described Cruz as hyper-arrogant and widely despised, and he emphasized—over and over—that the pervasive dislike of Cruz within the Bush ranks had nothing to do with ideology. (Cruz, he noted, never objected to Bush’s call for compassionate conservatism, immigration reform, and national education standards, and no one on the campaign regarded him as an ideologue.) The problem was simple: his personality.

So before Ted Cruz took on the role of ultra-conservative nutbar teahadist, he was a moderate conservative inside the Bush/Cheney 2000 campaign. As the aide inside the campaign tells it, Cruz isn’t just a big jerk now, he was a big jerk then:

“Ted thought he was an expert on everything,” says this campaign veteran, who asked not to be named. “He was a smart and talented guy, but completely taken with himself and his own ideas. He would offer up opinions on everything, even matters outside his portfolio. He was a policy guy, but he would push his ideas on campaign strategy. He would send memos on everything to everyone. He would come to meetings where he wasn’t invited—and wasn’t wanted.”

He sounds a lot like that guy who shows up for the neighborhood cookout uninvited with a tin full of liver and onions and a six-pack for himself. Apparently, the best way to end a meeting was for Ted to walk in. “People wouldn’t go to a meeting if they knew he would be there,” said the aide, “It was his inability to be part of the team. That’s exactly what he was: a big a**hole.”

Well isn’t that enlightening. Ted Cruz isn’t just an a**hole, he’s ALWAYS been an a**hole. His complete lack of personality and inability to maintain personal relationships came back to bite him, however, when he was denied a job in Bush’s administration.. Nobody wanted to work with him. Imagine that.

Ted Cruz took off for Texas where he could find the most ignorant constituents to pander to, managing to get himself
elected on a Tea Party platform of stupidity and zealotry. Since Tea Partiers don’t really count ass “people” per se, it’s safe to say that Ted Cruz just might go down as the most hated man in history.

If he's so hated, why did he win Iowa? Not defending him at all, I really wonder how.

I find it easy to believe he was too much of an asshole. Even people who think Dick Cheney is A-OK have to draw the line somewhere.

Sounds like a well-reasoned, completely balanced, impartial bit of reporting there.

I read somewhere that he's so hated no one in congress (even members of his own party who agree with him) will second any of the motions he makes.

In other words, he's the GOP version of Bernie Sanders!

It's funny when you have the ability to be open minded and unbiased and then you watch pea brained people who don't have that ability. It's like watching fish in a tank who don't know their entire world is a small rectangle.

For such people, when someone they dislike doesn't compromise, they are a hard-line idealist who would be a disaster for a President. But when someone they like doesn't compromise, they are a person of principles who has always fought hard for their beliefs.

    Like Sanders :giggle:

I love the ad Trump keeps running where Cruz gets caught in a lie about his immigration policy and gets completely tongue-tied. You can literally see him squirm when he can't figure out how to respond.

Hopefully his win in Iowa will just fire people up to vote for our true leader Trump.

Yet it really isn't too far fetched, is it? Does he come across as likable to you? Ideology aside, he isn't the kind of person to whom most people would be drawn. My read on him is that he is pure ambition. He is unfazed by defeat and wearing people down is how he gets his way. He's the pesky furniture or used car salesman who won't take no for an answer.

Watch out, if you insult Bernie... college students, high school dopes who have never worked and people who have been unsuccessful in life because they were lazy and/or just had a low-IQ will get mad at you. Whatever you do, don't investigate his economic policies or his would-be totalitarianism... focus on all the pink unicorns and free candy he is promising. He will deliver! Believe!

Not true in the least. Sanders and Cruz are nothing alike. Sanders isn't a shove his beliefs down your throat type. Yes, he has beliefs that are extreme, but the personality differences couldn't be wider. The only thing that they have in common is that neither is suited to be president.

It's rare for a person to actually telegraph being smarmy and arrogant when they are trying very hard to be likeable - but Cruz manages to pull it off. He played the god-boy card and it worked in Iowa... but no way does this guy get the nomination. I keep hearing stories "by other people" about how brilliant he is, how amazingly smart and so on. He's the GOP version of FrankenClintonSanders. No ability to compromise... moves around to places he can best get votes. Pure self-aggrandizing ambition with no fucks given for voters.

Sanders is very much a shove his beliefs down your throat type. He remains willfully ignorant on economics and how free markets work and simply wants to be some kind of (self professed) benevolent dictator to said markets. And both lack the ability to compromise, and the ability to believably sell their platform. Neither would achieve any of their agenda, although Sanders would probably achieve less because his views are so much more extreme.
