VIDEO: Texas High school football players suspended for intentionally hitting referee: report

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Updated: Sunday, September 6, 2015, 5:44 PM
A San Antonio football player who ran into the back of a referee watching a play and his teammate who then dove into the official after he fell have been suspended from the team and the school, according to local reports.

The Northside Independent School District confirmed the punishment Sunday, via San Antonio Fox affiliate KABB 29, two days after the allegedly premeditated attack took place during a 15-9 loss to neighboring Marble Falls.

NISD spokesman Pascual Gonzalez told The Associated Press that video of the incident was "extremely disturbing."

"It is not the good sportsmanlike behavior that we teach students," he said.

Before the referee was hit, two Jay players had been ejected on separate plays.

The incident occurred with approximately a minute left in Friday's game, according to Marble Falls coach Matt Green.

Marble Falls was trying to run out the clock and called for a handoff toward the left side of the line of scrimmage, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The penalties stemming from the incident gave Marble Falls a first down. John Jay lost 15-9.

Marble Falls coach Matt Green said John Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game.

"I've coached 14 years and I've never seen anything like it," Green said.

Video showed the referee watching the play, and his head snapping back when he is leveled from behind. The other player then dove on top of him.

The referee was "very upset" and "wanting to press charges," Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told the AP.

Elliott said he was seeking guidance from the state officials association, adding, "the first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again."

He declined to release the referee's name.

Maybe they were confused by the new extra point rules that NFL has it and fried their brains?

Not cool though. This isn't dropping a water balloon on someone. They are basically in suits of armour and took a running start at some dude.

Were they going to use an illegal object from their trunks? A steel chair? Isn't that usually why you take out the ref?

Legal? Maybe a civil lawsuit, not criminal.

We need legal advise from an opportunist. A person with no moral compass and completely devoid of human emotion or compassion.

This is what happens when they take away all avenues of physical contact and make everything organized. It used to be you could have a fist fight with someone without it escalating to a gun fight. Now, unfortunately, the risks are lower if you passive aggressively mow down the ref during a game then go after him after the game and give him a slap (which of course I don't condone).

    I disagree.

Physically attacking a school/sport official with the intent of injury is criminal.

The two of them need to be brought up on charges.

Slippery slope. Where do you draw the line?

Unless it's boxing or MMA, every fight or hard hit in sports is premeditated and a violation of the rules.

Dude, how can you condone hitting an official at full speed, especially when he's already on the ground? This was clearly planned between the two of them, which is conspiracy. If the kids had punched him in the face, that's obviously felony battery, so how is tackling him not felony battery?

    You're pulling my leg, right?

The kids should be expelled from their school, banned from all organized sports, and brought up on felony charges. End of story. No sympathy for their hurt feelings.

Football is such a pansy sport. In wrestling, the ref would have taken it like a man and the game would just go on like nothing happened.

That move is so insanely dangerous that I can't believe it was even allowed back in cave man days.

I went to high school with a kid who was paralyzed playing HS football while using his head to stop a running back. Lived in a wheel chair his entire life after that until he died at age 44.

How much do you want to bet they will be back at the school and on the team within a week? This is Texas high school football. Nothing warrants two starters to miss more than a game even if they took out an ax and chopped the ref into a thousand pieces. Ok! Ok! That might have warranted a two game suspension.

OK, how can you claim it's part of the game in any fashion? This was not incidental to the action. It was a deliberate attempt to injure the official. It's criminal.

Actually, I believe that because HS football is like religion in Texas, the people in charge of the sport MUST act to protect the faith.

Texans tend to have morals and stand for something. It's why they're respected and hated by much of America.
