Yes, it would be - and as far as I know rubbing alcohol is damn near lethal. I have a very hard time believing that they were pulling this switch. More than likely it was some sort of high alcohol neutral grain spirit (Everclear) with caramel coloring... but even that would not fool ANYONE into thinking its a scotch. If rubbing alcohol was potable, it'd sure as shit be a controled substance and, therefore, subject to similar laws. Now, if this TGIF was using it, they're in a shit ton more trouble than just watering down drinks and whatnot.

Biggest thing you have to watch for is 'false pours' which is someone giving you Cuervo when you ordered Patron, or some such other shit. Especially in a mixed drink ... order a Bombay and tonic, get a Beefeater and tonic.

TRIVIA: the first bottlings of whiskey were done, at great expense, because of scams like this. Back in olden times you'd go to the bar, see a cask/keg/barrel of... say... Evan Williams and order it. Sometimes you'd get what you ordered, sometimes watered-down ass-juice. So, they started bottling it. The whole "bonded" or "bottled in bond" whiskey thing was the governments way of protecting consumers from shady bottlings. Also, that's why some brands (wine or booze) will put foil, netting, or (in the case of Makers Mark) wax over the tops of their bottles, so it made it impossible or at least much more difficult for people to put on over on consumers.

There were several other bars in the area that they hit in their raid as well. USA Today reported it with the byline Smirnoff or Grey Goose?

What they did in the raids is go in and confiscate all opened bottles of booze, and then send them out for testing. And you can bet they sent people in beforehand. But was it the corporation? Or the General Managers?
