...heh, yeah the wells fargo bank inside the safeway store. i got 5 dollars cash back at self check out and figured id ask one of the tellers for change on my way out because i needed some quarters and she wanted to charge me a fee because i dont have a wells fargo account. i refused the offer on principle and got a safeway clerk to make change for me. thats so fucked up in so many ways.

She didn't want to. She's following policy. No surprise. Fee income is a huge money maker.

Banks don't want to deal with any move that isn't generating a revenue stream.

A long time ago I worked in a branch selling accounts, investments, etc. - a guy came in w/a literal shopping cart of pennies in canvas bags. The weight was enough to pop spot welds on the stolen cart. He expected someone to somehow count it all and get him cash money that day. Explaining that this would be taken to a corporate vault and valued by weight, and he'd get a deposit (or check) after fees set him off. It was pretty reasonable. Like $45 bucks or something to schlep all this and do all the work. I held the door open while he huffed out w/his cart of copper.

If that's the idea you might as well go to a store and buy a pack of Gum with a 10 and ask for a bunch of one's. Screw them and their change fees.

You should go in the bathroom, wipe your ass with the $5, and then gladly accept the surcharge for changing it.

...i bank with a couple of credit unions and use other credit union banks that are close to me to make deposits or use their atm at no fee because of shared banking credit unions have here. if your friend deposits that check in her own account she'll get the money if it doesnt bounce.

...refusing to make change is like refusing someone whos thirsty some water. it shouldnt have to be a business transaction, it makes the bank look chicken shit to this trust fund baby. the guy with the cart full of pennies might have better off with the value of copper in weight. i knew somebody who owned gambling machines and weight vs counting was the way to go, there were that many coins. maybe @1Vegasgirl knows how they process/count it/credit it/ up in the casinos. counting mah-kines seem less efficient vs weight but ive never had to deal with it.

This post reminds me of people who complain about fees to dump a few hundred bucks in change into a CoinStar mak-hine and get said hundreds in a couple of minutes v. rolling all GD day.
