I just bought my mom a bunch of jazz cds from Amazon, and imagine my surprise that they charged me sales tax! It was a first for me, but it seems as though the free ride is soon coming to a close for online retailers; they will need to start charging taxes for items shipped anywhere in the US.

For now, it's just 8 states Amazon collects taxes (states where shipped, not purchased).

    From their site: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=468512

    Orders Subject to Sales Tax
Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries

Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the following states are subject to tax:

    California
    Kansas
    Kentucky
    New York
    North Dakota
    Pennsylvania
    Texas
    Washington

No sales tax is charged when purchasing gift cards; however, purchases paid for with gift cards may be subject to tax.

That's only for states in which they have a physical presence, like a warehouse. They just opened an office in Massachusetts, so the DOR is trying to get them to collect here, too. Doesn't bother me though, since I shop at Amazon for the selection, not to duck sales tax.

I know what you're talking about, but this is different. These taxes are being collected due to legislation within these states, not just the "physical presence" thing. It's all coming to a close, which is probably a good thing for brick and mortars.

Amazon has made deals with states ahead of the clampdown to open more distribution centers, as they see the internet sales tax laws going federal within the next year or so.

I shop Amazon for the selection and price, but the extra 7 percent was nice too, but it will help local businesses out, so wtf.

This does suck. But it was bound to happen sooner or later and they did hold out a long time. I remember when Barnes and Noble (online) didn't charge sales tax (that didn't last long) and when Dell used to not charge either for orders shipped outside of Texas.

I only buy from Amazon once a year or so. Usually only when it's something I can't get locally. When I want something, I want it right now. :dontknow:

I'm getting my new tv from there once it drops to an acceptable price. They have a great return policy, and yes, I'm also ducking Connecticut's sales tax. :D

I'm a total addict, too, though being in Texas, it does suck (the tax thing)....and nothing I order ever seems to ship from here. Anyway, I always scour the web for the best prices, and order from whoever is cheapest, and most of the time, it's Amazon.

I've never shopped on Amazon, but we can use the tax dollars in Cali. Lottsa Firefighter pensions and health care for illegals to pay for.

Here in Illinois all of the warehouses closed shop and moved to Wisconsin where they were not required to collect sales tax. Typical democrat move to create a tax and then wonder why all of the businesses move to other states. On our income tax form the state actually asks you to list how much money you have spent on online purchases that year. I put a big 0 every year. Fuck them.
