Does anyone here remember the TV show "Soap"? I am watching an old episode of "Super Password" and one of the celebrity players is Robert Mandan. I doubt anyone under 30 knows who that is but his main claim to fame is his role on the controversial TV show "Soap" on the ABC network. Network affiliates refused to carry the show because of its controversial and "over the top" content.

The content was so racy, Comedy Central would end up playing episodes on Saturday afternoons in the 1990's. (meaning the show was not racy at all)

If this means nothing to you, just remember that this is the TV show that was Billy Crystal's big break.

The scandalous thing was Billy Crystal's character was gay. First gay character on TV. Robert Guillaume was the smart ass butler Benson who got his own spin off.

I watched it for the chicks, Diane Canova and Dinah Manoff.

I forgot about Benson. That show lasted for almost a decade. Soap only lasted a couple of years.

SOAP was so fucking great and really held up well, IMO. I loved the show when it originally aired. I had a girlfriend back in a the early '90s who had every episode on VHS when they ran some marathon and we watched them all the time. They were still really funny. Chuck and Bob still rule.

The show was way ahead of it's time.

Truly groundbreaking, I bet Trump was a big fan.

    Really?

I remember loving that show and then tapering off, and I quit watching around season four.

    Much like Dexter.

You can find the complete series on DVD for around $20-25.

I remember Comedy Central ran a New Year's Eve/Day marathon in 1993/94. That's the last time I've seen it.

I was at the pilot episodes taping. I was visiting my cousins in LA and we went to a taping of a "Brand New Show for ABC, called SOAP". Bill Dana was the warm up guy and he did his Jose Jimenez bit. The producer then came out and explained the premise of the show and introduced the cast. Billy Crystal was an unknown as most of the cast was to me. I was only 14. Diana Canova had an immediate impact on me however.

Watched "Soap" As it ran ran primetime growing up in Louisiana......But read about this way out weird show that ran at the same time "Soap" called
"Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman".........That was banned from TV in certain areas.....Including mine......One plot line I remember because it was so outrageous for the time......One of the male characters lost his penis somehow.....And it was replaced by a transplanted one from a dog.........Did anyone see that?
