i just wanted to vent a little. Regular radio is just awful and I have no idea how people listen to it.
I usually have my ipod or Sirius going in my car but today I was driving an older limousine that did not have a aux plug for the ipod plus I had a long trip (Greenport to Copiague NY).
Ok so I put on WBAB 102.3 which is I used to listen to in the car back before I got Sirius in 2005. Are people really requesting these songs? how many times can you hear Iron man and paranoid or war pigs? Back in Black? who is requesting back in black? stairway to heaven? if they played a deeper cut off of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" would they lose listeners? I don't understand how this works.
Then they say they got a request for some Cream, and guess what song they play. Yep, Sunshine of your love. would the listeners freak out if they played Badge and would they change the station?
Are the listeners all excited when like "enter sandman" comes on? Or any of the other songs listed above?
Do they say to their friends "YES!! I couldn't wait to hear this song!!"
So after hearing what the songs were that people requested, I called up and requested Blind Faith "Well Alright". the woman said she couldn't play that, it was too deep of a cut. so then I said, "ok then can you play some Sabbath? how about Electric Funeral?" me im thinking listeners would love to hear that! She goes "No, that's a deep cut too." then I said to her, Sabbath has more than one album other than Paranoid... why do you always play the same 3 songs off of that one album and that's it?" so she hung up on me with no answer. lol! I suck.
thanks for listening. chime in and tell me how you all feel about this. gimme some opinions. thank you!

It's really shitty now, even by todays standards. 3 Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin garbage and impersonators everywhere. Those bands are horrid, and it's all I hear. So fucking bad.

Regular rock radio really does suck nowdays. The local "classic rock" station has a playlist of the same 100 shitty songs that have been played to death! This kind of programming is the only thing keeping Sirius alive- at least the music channels have some variety.

Cheesy morning shows around here I would rather listen to a bit of stern to better hate on the show. I would get O and A but I refuse to pay sirius anymore money.

We have a station in these parts that does a "Block Party Weekend", where they play three or four songs in a row from the same artist.

You'd think this would give the listener the opportunity to hear some deep cuts, but no. If the station plays a "block" of Boston, you're going to hear Peace Of Mind, Don't Look Back, and More Than A Feeling. If it's Nirvana, you'll hear Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium, and Heart Shaped Box. No fucking variety whatsoever. And to top it off, they play "blocks" of songs from bands no one gives a shit about, like Collective Soul, and ignoring classic bands like Deep Purple, KISS, Journey, and Alice Cooper.

For those who can stream audio on the go, Spotify and Pandora are awesome.

It's always been this way. People are boring, they like what's familiar.

Even the so called 'alternative' stations are mostly playing the same old stuff. It's 2014, how many times can you hear "Under The Bridge", "Santeria" and "Welcome To Paradise"? But like Mendelsohn says, the masses like their familiarity. When stations go deep into the music library their ratings often suffer and they can't charge as much for advertising.

Radio is mass media. Most people aren't what one would consider to be die-hard music fans. They want familiarity. They want to hum along or sing along to every song they hear. When you own a 10 or 20 million dollar (or way more in major markets) property like a radio station, you aren't going to take any chances, and when it comes to pleasing either 98% of your audience or 2%, guess which segment it's gonna be?

FWIW, I've sat in on auditorium tests. They bring in a hundred or so loyal listeners and play them ten second samples of songs, asking them if they like it, sick of it, want to hear it more, etc... You'd be dumbfounded that these people still can't get enough of Whole Lotta Love, More Than a Feeling, and Tom Sawyer.

We haven't had a hard rock station in Portland for 3 years and probably never will (we do have a couple classic rock and one alternative). I don't miss it at all because I have everything on my ipod.

You don't have to pay to listen to O&A if you have a smart phone.

What happened to good vocalists? Every singer sounds like Blink182 & The Dead Milkmen.

Un-listenable. Just awful. I can't live without CDs/Ipod/satellite these days. Program directors know nothing and right now terrestrial is petrified that they'll offend a sponsor or their listeners that watering down playlists for "safety's sake" is the only option.

Well 94.3 was the shark, and it existed until... today... It keeps coming back up and leaving, it's like a seasonal radio show but it plays Nirvana, Radiohead, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Social Distortion, Alien Ant Farm, Johnny Cash, some 80s hair metal, it was my favvvvvorite to listen to on the water. I really hope it didn't vanish again.[IMG]
