OK, so I'm a 51-year-old chubby dude who is trying to get back into shape (5'11" 225 lbs), like a judge friend of mine told me recently, "fat don't fuck!"

I've been down this road before, but, frankly, it HAS been awhile.

I very recently moved offices, right downtown, and there is a gym across the street. I joined it last week and worked out yesterday (and am headed back this afternoon).

Frankly, I've never been a big fan of "classic" gyms, and my previous favorite workouts were in a local boxing gym. I shed a ton of weight and was in pretty good shape, then I got busy with work, with my son, got lazy, started eating bad, and you know the rest.

The thing I liked about the boxing gym is that everything is on a timer, and you go by rounds (jumping rope, hitting the heavy bag, speed bag, working mitts, etc.) The drawback was that the boxing gym was a haul from my office, and it really screwed with my work/court schedule.

Anyway, I figured I would try to keep things simple at first, and follow the following plan:

M-F: workout with free weights/machines at least 3-days a week (2 arms/chest, 1 legs); 20-minutes of cardio on the treadmill every time in

Saturday: a mile to 2-mile run, or a mile with stadium stairs at the local junior college football stadium that's right down the street from my house, or a workout at the boxing gym

    What do you guys think?

Also, I am going to watch what I eat. A colleague of mine suggested dropping sugar, bread/pasta, and dairy, so I am going to try that too.

Get it and just do what he tells you for 90 days.
I'm serious, it will change your life.

In 4 weeks you will notice a difference, in 8 weeks your friends will notice a difference and in 12 weeks everyone will notice

First, I would stop eating so much.

It doesn't matter what you eat, just don't eat so much of it.

Then, just start walking around the block, then, 2 blocks etc.

    You will lose weight.

I would tone with light weights or, isometrics.

No need for a gym membership.

Start doing yoga. You'll get more of a workout than you ever imagined. Not only will you drop weight...you'll gain flexibility, get toned, and it's good for your soul.

It also doesn't suck to work out with lots of cool chicks half your age. Just don't hit on them...they come to the studio to get away from dudes hitting on them.

i dropped 18 lbs in the last 45 days by just eliminating processed meats, breads, cheese and potato chips from my diet.
I feel better already with more energy and my blood sugar is easier to manage as well.
Next comes cardio and some serious portion control to see how much more i can lose.
    Good luck!:wigtip:

As of this morning, I've lost 4.8 lbs since Monday morning. It was all weekend binge weight though.

I say forget all that gym, yoga sht, main problem is food, go on either weight watchers or Jenny Craig they work, throw in a some walks, maybe get a bike, you'll be good by early summer.

Yoga is not the answer, but it is part of the answer.
Diet is a big part at the initial stage, exercise will gradually become more important until you reach a happy balance.
There needs to be a mix of cardio, yoga, resistance and diet for it to work properly.
That's why I recommended P90X. There are other workouts that will give you results as well, but I am most familiar with P90X and it works.

You can build muscle and that will become your fat burners. If u diet only, you will always have to diet and your body will not be able to regulate itself if u go off your diet and u will gain it back fast.

Won't tone you up though. Thin without tone looks terrible. Need resistance training.

    Just my thought...
at 5'11" you should be around 185 I should think, so that is NOT alot for you to get to.....
NO white foods! This includes potatoes, pasta, nothing fried no sodas of any sort....
Protein with veggies, doesn't have to be boring......
When I was in my PEAK shape it was a good mix of weights and cardio, with tennis thrown in also, don't discount Kettle bell workouts....
if you can afford it, get a personal trainer once a week for a month or so to show you proper form, and give you good workouts to follow, we are never as hard on ourselves as someone else is on us......
Also, per the other thread, you are in a pussy drought, so you have a goal If you build it, they will come....:)

Yes i try to measure it at least twice a day to see where i'm at and to keep a running record to monitor my averages.
Plus its interesting to see how certain foods affect it as well.

    I agree 100%. I did P90X for awhile and would also recommend it. Personally, I do cardio 5 days/week, weights 3 days/week, yoga 1 day/week and strict diet 4 days/week.

Sounds like a solid starter plan. As you mentioned, try eliminating or at the very least, limiting your starch/carb intake.....you'll lose weight fairly quickly. At the gym; I NEVER rest between sets; meaning, I normally will do 50 jumping jacks between EVERY set of weights. This keeps my heart rate up and adds to my cardio. Good luck and please hit me back if I can offer you any more advice/tips. :)

    good for you.
i find that a good class- like a boot camp or HITT or something- is a pretty intense workout. you end up pushing yourself much harder than your traditional treadmill or elliptical session
p90x and insanity is also a great workout if you want to spend $100 or so
