A REAL SHOCKER FROM STERN: APOLOGY FOR SELENA COMMENTS
Howard Stern yesterday read an on-air apology, in Spanish, to anyone offended by comments on his show about the late Tejano singer Selena. In Texas, however, the League of United Latin Citizens Council (LULAC) said it wasn't sure that was good enough. LULAC, which a few years ago had about 400,000 members and now has around 100,000, has threatened to organize advertiser boycotts and file a complaint with the FCC. This probably insures the tempest will continue, which is not a wholly bad thing for Stern. Before he read his statement around 8:10 yesterday morning, he said, "I'm hoping" this will end the controversy. Then he added, "Well, I'm hoping and I'm not hoping. . . . I don't know what I'm hoping.
" The statement itself, which he read with a Selena song playing in the background, began, "As you know, I'm a satirical person. My remarks on Selena's tragic death were certainly not made with the aim of causing even more anguish to her family, friends and those who loved her.
" A few minutes after he read the statement, he compared it to John Kennedy's famous "Ich bin ein Berliner.
" That's Stern's style to say everything with a straight face and it's one reason he has faced (and survived) similar tempests, charges, lawsuits and boycott threats from black groups, women's groups, Filipino groups and many others. Yesterday, after sidekick Robin Quivers jokingly asked whether someone had written the statement phonetically for him and whether he understood what it said, he read it a second time. The firestorm started this week after the first stories of a crazed fan murdering Selena, when Stern did a riff on how boring Tejano music is. From there, in classic Stern fashion, he escalated into insulting the taste of all Spanish-music listeners and by Wednesday, when jocks from a Tejano station in Houston called to demand an explanation, he was telling them, "Go back to Mexico.
