Maybe this will make up for my failed Lake Natron thread. :)

American troops ride into the city of Saltillo during the the war with Mexico. This early photograph, known as a daguerrotype, is one of the first images of a war ever captured on film. It was taken in 1847.

This 1870 image is considered the first actual photograph taken of a battle. It shows a line of Prussian troops advancing. The photographer stood with the French defenders when he captured this image.

Roger Fenton took hundreds of photos of the Crimean War. This shot, taken in 1855, shows British troops dressed for battle. The image is 155 years old.

If this were the first action shot, it would be something. But I have to call BS.

his would be during the Franco Prussian war. Battle of Sedan, the major battle that ended the war. Prussian Victory, of course.

    - No clouds of thick smoke. Smokeless powder was just being invented in Austria, but hadn't been adopted for widespread use at this time.

    - The exaggerated death flail of the man on the right of the first line seems fake.

    - It would be unlikely for a photographer of the time with a bulky camera and tripod to be taking a shot from such an exposed position as such close range.

    - They're in skirmishing order, standing in very open ground. By this time in history this would be an anachronism.

-- By the end of the civil war in 1865 it was already understood to be too dangerous to stand in the open firing against modern enemies. Trenches were more the norm by then, and standing at just 200 yards or so from a defensive line and blazing away in the open would be suicidal. They'd be rushing the position or firing from cover.

    - little or no motion blur. Photography was better, but no high speed film still.

-Cavalry in dense column would be quickly destroyed at this range in this era. They're just standing there.

-They do seem almost on parade, which means this is probably posed. It is reminescent to me, of shots of regiments on parade posed during the Civil war.

It is the actual battlefield, however. From a modern photo you can see the house on the right is the same.

You know that there a few Shedders who are seething over this "blatant worship of the military." But, as my great-grandfather once told me, "Who are you!?"

When white guys kill each other, it's glorious and noble. When reggies do it, they're just apes.
