dude had 1 job
he kept Top Gear in line
The British "empire" is obnoxious, but they're not the only European country that tried to colonize the world. Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Italy...all of them, "colonized" or as we'd say today, "committed genocide" against indigenous peoples. Even the U.S. has/had the Philippines, Cuba, guam, etc.
Above the C in Colonies there used to be a country called "The Republic of Vermont." That map is wrong.
But at one point (before 1791) Vermont was under the crown. This map isn't showing the holdings of the British Empire at any one time in history - it's showing all lands that at some point in their history were a part of the empire. E.g. India and Nigeria weren't part of the empire at the same time the 13 colonies were.
I've never seen Top Gear; I just find it hilarious that the English, of all people, have the nerve to be snobby about the quality of foreign automobiles.
Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the west to the east
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all
There is a word for that I think...
the British Empire, not counting the U.S. and Canada, was all about business entities pulling every resource out of the country using essentially slave labor -- if you don't populate a country you don't have any long term prospect of holding on to it because the natives will eventually get tired of the bullshit and kick them out -- the Brits educated generations of natives who wanted independence for their people
you can also blame Hitler and Clement Atlee, but the writing was on the wall after the best of Europe was bled out by WWI
