I think there is nothing being made by the networks worth remaining awake to watch. Starz and the alternative networks (Amazon, Netflix, etc) are the only ones with the balls to risk making really new programming. Neil Gaiman (I hear it is now only appropriate to write his name as Neil Fucking Gaiman) is one of the few real scifi / horror / fantasy genius to appear during the past 20 years and American Gods is his tour de force.

I'm a proud owner of every Sandman comic. Neil Gaiman is a motherfucking rock star of a writer.

He collaborated with Terry Pratchett on Good Omens and that is finally being made into a movie too. Some books you just cannot put down or forget over time. Gaiman's are like that (and he has a cool wife too).

That's the one I've read. I couldn't remember the name of it.

there is an unabridged audio book of it with Martin Jarvis performing it.

Most audiobooks are kind of dry because the narrator just reads the book to you, but this is more of a one man dramatization and its great. Martin Jarvis is kind of like Simon Jones (Hitchhiker's Guide) and everything he does is a real performance.
