'There were hundreds of fins': USS Indianapolis survivors relive horror of seeing crew-mates eaten alive while stranded in shark-infested water for FIVE days as Hollywood circles on the story
    • The Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific in July 1945 after delivering parts for the atomic bomb to bases on the island of Tinian
    • The bomb was later dropped on Hiroshima
    • Survivors of the blasts spent nearly a week in shark-infested waters fighting off attacks
    • Of the ships 1,197 crewmen, only 317 survived
    • Two movies, one starring Nicolas Cage, are now in development

I watched a Jaws documentary recently that talked about Spielberg enlisting the help of an Indianapolis survivor to create that scene. He wrote his account and then Robert Shaw took it and edited down for his character. He requested that he film the scene drunk, but they couldn't get any good takes. He was embarrassed and asked Spielberg for a second chance the next day at which time he knocked it out of the park. Spielberg and the creative team acknowledged that that scene is what really bonded the three cast members, who had not really clicked or gotten along well up to that point.

Decent TV movie came out in 1991. Good insight on the court martial of the captain.
