I'm not talking about safe targets like Mel Gibson or Roger Waters over using the N word or attacking Israel. I mean goofing on random celebrities like he used to. The last one I remember was either Lena Dunham or Gabourey Sidibe, which is like 5 years ago? Any more recent ones?

I think Leno was his last big celeb bash and when even Letterman was bored with his "I hate Jay" schtick that was pretty much the end of it all.

Leno was a pretty safe target considering most comics seem to dislike him for whatever reason.

Excellent question. It must be 5 years at least.

I just watched a podcast with Norm and Jim Carey and they both talked about what a pro Jay is/was.

It's got to be Simon from AGT.

And only because he attacked Howard directly.

As we all know, he's flipped as hard as anyone ever could. His ass-kssing level has become astonishing.

He railed against that girl Lorde for way too long last week but I zoned out before I could tell if it was any good.

I know quite a few comedians who distanced themselves from Jay after he took over the Tonight Show. Part of it was siding with Letterman, part of it happened when Jay didn't stand up for manager Helen Kushnick when she was fired by NBC, but most of it was because Jay watered down his much-more angry, cynical standup act and made it "safe" for network viewing. The real Jay was the guy from the 1980s; the 1990s Jay was much more calculated and phony on-air.

He actually gave Oprah some post golden globes shit this week. Also they kept playing the clip of Salma HAyek saing TIMES UP - because it sounded ridiculous. Almost felt a little like the old days.

He said Oprah looked good though and she looked fat as hell to me for someone who owns part of Weight Watchers.

Well, if she was 200 pounds, and now she's "only" 160 pounds, she's better than she used to be. But 160 pounds for a 5'5" woman ain't exactly looking good.

Oprah has no fucking excuse: she has THREE BILLION DOLLARS, so she could afford bodyguards, 24/7 assistants to stop her from overeating, multiple chefs to feed her non-fattening fruits and vegetables all day long, and hot workout guys to force her to move that fat ass and sweat off the pounds. Money solves a lot of those problems.

What's funny is, he had to apologize/backtrack on both of those. I know he took some heat for both of them.

I think Apatow hustled Dunham in the studio (or was it a phone call?) so Howard could kiss her ass, and while I don't think he apologized to Precious, I think he Mexican standoff'ed her with an "I'm as big a mess as she is", or something equally retarded. Or maybe he did that with Dunham (too).

Great post/question, by the way.

I would have said Andy Dick.

Even worse than him not going after celebrities is his defense of them. Remember Ricky Gervais' first Golden Globes spot, where he bashed a few celebs? Not only did Howard fail to support/applaud it; he actually called it "mean".

When the Sony e-mails came out, Howard feigned confusion about how he should feel about what Simon wrote (about replacing him on AGT) while he let (i.e. instructed) Robin and Fred bash Simon on his behalf.

It was only later that he felt comfortable bashing Simon, which was strange, given how Howard totally decided to leave AGT, and wasn't pushed out at all.

That's a very slick move for a PC to make.

Why not put all the nasty stuff on someone else while you keep yourself clean and innocent. That will eventually allow you to speak what you actually think.

Unfortunately for Howard, most of his fans that date back to the 90's knows exactly what he's doing and because of it, are once again repulsed by Howard's cute little attempts of being a true Hollywood doer and shaker - while at the same time insists he's never sold out.

He may have had flashes here and there but Jay was never particularly angry or cynical.
