The iconic "Motown Sound" soul era produced a number of great, prolific song writers such as Holland Dozier Holland, Norman Whitfield and Smokey Robinson, many legendary artists... and some of the best albums and singles over the past 5 decades. Most of the songs, which to this day hold up pretty damn well, incorporate catchy, unique melodies, inspired, and sometimes heartfelt lyrics, backed by perfect background vocal harmonies and instrumentals.

I'll post some of my favorite artists and songs - several being pretty obvious and popular while others being less popular stirring renditions which may not have achieved commercial success or were the B list sides (sorry, not @Dlist :) of more successful 45 releases.

    What are some of yours?

Do you know Stevie Wonder gave them the circus-y music hook for this? Just gave it to them!

No, great group and song but that's part of Phil Spector's Phillies label "Wall of Sound"

Possible heresy, but Lennon's voice always slays me in this one.

I love pretty much everything that Lamont Dozier and the Holland brother wrote but, I especially like the Norman Whitfield stuff.

Those guys are responsible for most of the so called "Motown Sound"
