The once mythical Egyptian city was found after being hidden under sand and mud. Also known as Thonis, it was an Egyptian city near Alexandria whos ruins were found 15 years ago under 150 feet of water. It was a city with numerous harbors and anchorages which sat at the mouth of the River Nile delta as it opened up to the Mediterranean.

With beginnings that date back to 12th century BC, the formerly thriving city enjoyed a period of extraordinary wealth. It served as a major port of entry for all ships coming to the Greek word. They have found over 700 ship anchors. It was also of huge religious importance because of it's temple of Amun.

It vanished about 1,200 years ago presumably after major earthquakes and floods caused the sudden collapse of the unstable sediment around the city. It has remained buried since. Archaeologists are still digging up the city to reveal it's treasures and ruins.

    What Heracleion looked like....

For some reason, it's never a team of reggies doing the discovering. Not from pics I've ever seen anyway. I have many thoughts about many things.

That's cool. The visibility is great there. How is it that it's only recently been discovered?

I have a number of "beefs" with this story. I need to vent:

    1) A city is not "buried" if it's underwater.

    2) A city is not really a "city" if it comprises what's in that picture. There's barely enough there to call it a large market.

    3) Alexandria was not part of the Greek world, it was part of the Egyptian world. Those were two different civilizations.

    4) The city sank 2200 years ago, not 1200 years ago.

Alexandria was named after a Macedonian. Ptolemy, a Greek, became the ruler of Egypt after Alexander's death. His line lasted 400 years all the way to Cleopatra, who is universally referred to as having been a Greek.

Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great who was a Greek/ Macedonian conquered who conquered most of the know world at that time. Ptolemy, one of his generals, became the governor of Egypt. Cleopatra, from the Ptolemaic dynasty, was Greek. The Greeks adopted Egyptian customs and blended them with their own customs from the Hellenic world. In fact, there are still many Greeks in Alexandria.
