So I'm in our boring monthly staff meeting this morning when I heard something so fucking ridiculous on the PC continuum that I had to literally bite my tongue.

The last few months, one of the CEO's talking points has been "straight talk" - as in, if you have a problem with someone, be an adult and address it with them, not gossip about it with your coworkers. Today, the CAO referenced "straight talk" and the CEO busted in on her and said, "No, no, no - remember we're calling it DIRECT TALK now so that nobody will potentially be offended."

It's a small company (probably less than 50 people now) and there is one Lesbian employee who is the coolest chick you'll ever meet. She is fun, funny and totally UN-PC. I can't imagine they changed this phrase because of her. It's just a sign of the times. :tears:

Management Consultants now tell CXOs that it's cool and necessary to be as PC as possible. Cuz it's what all the cool kids are doing.

Ugh. It's bad enough that our CEO is a 55 y/o man who wears TruReligion jeans. Embarrassing.

    http://www.newspeakdictionary.com/ns-prin.html

The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of IngSoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought -- that is, a thought diverging from the principles of IngSoc -- should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words. Its vocabulary was so constructed as to give exact and often very subtle expression to every meaning that a Party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other meaning and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods. This was done partly by the invention of new words, but chiefly by eliminating undesirable words and stripping such words as remained of unorthodox meanings, and so far as possible of all secondary meaning whatever.

Is direct talk like straight talk but without the honesty?

Did you have a HR or consultant review recently? BC this reeks of that type of intervention.

If your lesbian co-worker is anything like me, she probably had "oh god, don't think it's me, don't think it's me" running through her head when this topic came up

The worst thing is when you have a "diversity" HR specialist. My company has one that ticks three boxes - young, gay and black - and he actually said during a senior leadership meeting that the company should discriminate in favor of diversity because diversity is good. He was quickly corrected by the head of HR that the right thing to do is to hire the best talent, regardless of their orientation, ethnic background or gender.

If this isn't a "let's play leapfrog" gay orgy about to happen I don't know what is.

Political Correctness is a fucking disease, a means to control thought. I first heard of it in the context of women's rights around 1972. Is your thinking *politically correct*? Fuck you, I'll think as I please.

Can you blame a company for trying to foresee and eliminate a potential fake outrage?

You sound like Gary Puppet! :hehe:

She's engaged. I thought her partner would be prettier but unless you're those fuckheads Tom & Giselle, one person in a couple usually is better looking.
