any fans here?
Obscure group defied convention. "Like us or you're not cool" school of shit.
Sold $20 something thousand copies at most.
I once had to listen to their 1 hour deconstruction of Sgt. Pepper.
I did it because I needed to score some dope from a hippie couple fond of hallucinogens who owned every album this group released.
Assumed they were some kind of artists concept project.
Not fun but great graphics.
Bet no one here has ever heard one track by them/him/her.
I agree that the majority of the board here hasn't heard of them, but I don't discredit them, I've loved them for 20+ years. they've influenced a bevy of musicians as well. les claypool once said if not for the influence of the residents, the sun city girls & metallica he wouldn't be playing music.
I've heard Meet The Residents but they're the kind of band where I look at how huge their discography is and I think "fuck, I don't have the time or energy for this"
you can put Jandek and even Guided by Voices into that same category for me.
but I think I've heard every album by The Fall.
Really impressive visuals.
Who were the artists responsible?
You know, for the entire concept. Because it's diabolically ingenious.
The dissonant music is a bit more tiresome for my tastes.
No doubt as to their huge influence on other creative talents.
oh,I hear ya, its massive & they're definitely an aquired taste. check out the wonderful vid i put up if you got a few minutes. funny james brown story in there.
"the cryptic corporation" & "por-no-graphix"...are their companies that deal with the visuals, but its basically all them. they work anonymously
Growing up in the bay area I've always heard about them but I put them in a category with Zappa, Primus, etc. Too avant garde for me. How have they managed to remain anonymous for so many years?
i'll check out that video in a bit.
since we're talking avant-garde music I need to take the opportunity to namedrop the one from my hometown, London, Ontario.
the Nihilist Spasm Band has been around since the 60s doing their weird, homemade instrument stuff. there's a big mural of them downtown I used to walk by everyday. strange guys.
This is all I hear when I hear stuff like that.
lol, I remember those bits. back when Howard was funny.
I like some weird music but you can't take it too seriously. there is a lot to make fun about it.
do yourself a favor & listen to this little ditty
Sorry, I listen to Z100
what's ONE good Sun City Girls album to try out? they seem like another band that felt they have to record and release every single note they've ever played.
I assume you've heard of Negativland. I dig those guys
I love Negativland!...for sun city girls i'd suggest Dante's Disneyland Inferno. great double lp
here's a couple weird and fucking creepy tunes for Halloween
Exactly how I feel about them. Zappa too. I just don't time the time or energy to weed through the shit.
I've heard the couple of covers Primus did. Hello Skinny/Constantinople. That's about it. Not a fan.
