Wait. It's was always NSAL collecting the money to expand their building.

Now it's a separate foundation? What's going on?

Nice work! I love combing through Form 990s for the truth behind the bullshit. Yet, they have yet to file said Form 990. Tisk-Tisk.

Not to worry, they might have collected a few thousand dollars before 2015. I think it was in time for the Billy Joel concert where they finally got some real money.

It is so amazing that a man of the Wigs means doesn't spend the couple hundred bucks to get a 501c3. But the reasoning behind it is probably to hide how they are just pissing through the funds to pay for Beefus' ferrier to keep it shoed. No where in NSALs tax returns is there any line item for Beefus and its salary. Needing to keep every marble is his mo all the time.

How can they claim to be independent? Theirn SOLE reason for existing is to renovate a building owned by NSAL....

No a lot of charities spend lavishly on their "volunteer board" or key members NSAL is one of those. Also if they have not received actual donations to BFF then there is nothing to report. It is very shady to run around for that long and say you have a charity that really is not.

There's a couple of issues here: (1) What representations were made to donors? Did they think they were dealing with a fundraiser for NSAL to create BFF? A non-profit organization? A non-profit charity? Each of these is different. Solicited funds for a particular purpose go in a different legal bucket than general donations. (2) Once donations were made, where was the money held? The whole point of incorporating a non-profit, and then separately seeking charitable status, is the same for incorporating a business: you want legal protections and centrality of business functions. If you are mixing donated money with the money of NSAL or your personal bank account (!), you are opening a Pandora's box of trouble for everyone as there is no business form to pierce during litigation.

Stern loves lawyers; so I'm sure someone vetted all of this years ago. But is very, very odd to have a distinct non-profit entity that did not seek out its charitable status until this year. At a minimum, it may put the donors' tax deductible claims at issue. At a maximum, it could open up Howard and Beth to personal liability, if there was no corporate form to "shield" them. Moreover, many states require registration of charities, and I do not see BFF listed in the NY database.

As for the lavish spending, welcome to world of non-profits. There are no "profits" to distribute, but you can spend like hell on salaries, art for the premises, and fundraisers. The IRS in theory looks at when, why and how much is being spent for charitable operations. In a place like NYC, this gives the charities a lot of leeway to set bullshit salaries and spend on red carpet galas, as there is a colorable claim that this is what it takes to continue operations in a place like NYC. This is precisely why Charity Navigator exists: as a private market alternative to hoping the G-men look things over.

Looks like the "Ruling Date" on which it got 501(c)(3) status was in February 2015 - I didn't realize that Wiggy had set up the foundation separately from the NSAL, as even the recent auctions mentioned that proceeds were going to the Animal League.

It's not the spending that shocks me at all. I'm from NYC.

But the 2 of them raking in money and doing what, putting it in their bank accounts or under their mattresses, is shocking.

Spring 2015 - Bianca's Furry Friends Still Needs Money

Spring is in the air, and fans of Howard Stern, Beth Stern and the North Shore Animal League ("NSAL") must be waiting with baited breath for the start of construction on the Bianca's Furry Friends project. After all, Beth told folks after the Billy Joel concert in May 2014 that "because of his huge donation, we are on target to break ground next spring!" An NSAL executive also mentioned this time frame in another article about the project in 2014.

Sadly, as of this date, there has been no announcement of when said ground breaking will begin, so fans are left to wonder when that special day will arrive.

    another thing from article....

NSAL Already has a Cage-Free Environment - the Cat Habitat

Beth often mentions the cage-free benefit of Bianca's Furry Friends, which is certainly a noble concept.

However, it is odd that Beth does not mention that the NSAL already has a cage-free environment for cats which is called the "Cat Habitat" and it has been in existence for years. The NSAL describes this paradise as a place where:

"All of the surfaces are covered in cat-friendly materials so our feline inhabitants are able to roam freely, play, and socialize with their cat friends 24 hours a day. Located across the street from our Adoption Center, the Cat Habitat gives cats a chance to stretch their legs, sharpen their claws and mingle with their friends. This open-space living is especially helpful to, and appreciated by, cats that have been in our care more than 30 days."
