I had a 4k tv (my fiance's at the time, it was over $2000). When we broke up, I got the same brand (LG) but NOT 4k. It was $600 and the picture quality is exactly the same.

The 4k tv did come with a much snazzier remote, though. That was the only difference.

Exactly the same while viewing 4k media? Doubtful.

My ipad pro is my tv now. Best picture of anything I've ever owned. Everything else is for computing / gaming.

If you can't see the difference of 4k media on a 4 k display compared to 1080, you may be blind.

4K streaming uses 7GB of bandwidth per hour, no es bueno if you have monthly data caps. Although it is good for service providers looking to hit you with overage charges.

I have two 50" 720i Panasonic plasmas and a 65" 1080p one. Can't tell the difference at the distances I watch from, and the chart seems to back that up.

I found the source makes more difference. A shitty Chromecast stick doesn't look nearly as good as a Roku 3.

Although being able to see the picture clearer while watching a cooking show in the kitchen is a plus.

My nephew has one in his home theater--it's 85 inches, and his seating is two rows, pretty close, we watched Sicario in 4k--the picture was mind blowing

It just stands to reason that the larger the screen, the more lines of pixels, the better. I'm pretty happy with the picture of my 65" Samsung 4k TV.

The colors and black are brilliant on those Panasonic Plasmas. I had one that one of our kids by accident launched a Wii remote at and killed it. It's a shame that plasmas have gone extinct.

4K content definitely looks better at a normal seating distance (10-12 feet for a 55"-60" display) than 1080p when viewing 4K content. The rub is that there isn't as much 4K content available for most viewers. My Time Warner isn't even in 1080p...its 1080i, which is essentially 720p. I pay an extra 2 bucks to get the 4K Netflix just so I don't feel stupid for buying the 4K TV. I often recommend that people buy a nice 60"1080p for 500 bucks intead of triple for the 4K until there is more 4K content available. Hell, by then, those 4K TVs will have dropped in price anyway.

I'm pretty sure that as my eyesight goes, I'm probably not seeing everything the way a younger person can. Along those lines, I find it interesting with a lot of my audiophile friends who spend a shitload on high end audio equipment like speakers. I hate to point out to them that by the time they can afford the good stuff, their hearing no longer has the range to really appreciate the difference.
