USS Constitution(Old Ironsides) is a wooden hull, three masted frigate of the U.S. Navy. Named by President George Washington and launched in late 1700's, she is the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat.

In the late 1700's, she was put to patrol off the eastern seaboard between New York and Chesapeake Bay, to protect against French vessels under orders of Great Britain.

In the early 1800's she was put back out to sea with other frigates by Thomas Jefferson to protect American merchant ships in the Mediterranean and to pursue peace with the Barbary states. The Constitution was repaired after by Paul Revere with copper sheets he supplied.
She was then sent to Tripoli to assist the Philadelphia which was taken down by the Tripoline navy. The Constitution and four other frigates, severely destroyed the Triploine gunboats and navy crews.

The Constitution is most famous for her actions in the War of 1812 against Great Britain, when she captured numerous merchant ships and sank five heavily armed British war ships. She was carrying 50 guns at the time. After the battles the Constitution outran enemy squadrons by dumping over 2,300 gallons of drinking water and "wetting down" her sails during winds, during a 72 hour chase.

She was used in the Mediterranean Squadron during the 1820's and then used again during the 1860's on the eastern seaboard during the Civil War.

I used to gaze upon this beautiful naval vessel on a regular basis, while at meetings in the office building directly across the wharf from it. A truly magnificent ship.

I love seeing the tall ships when they are in Toronto. The craftsmanship is unbelievable and the work it takes to sail is awesome to see.

When I was a kid we always stopped at the Constitution during visits to the grandparents in MA. I haven't been on it thirty years and I haven't even thought about about it in years. Thanks.

One day of each trip was devoted to Boston. The Boston Children's Museum (though I think we mostly went to the previous one):

It's a travesty you don't mention the aquarium as one of the best tourist spots to visit in Bahhhston.

The Constitution is an amazing thing to see, and one of the biggest bonus is getting to talk to American servicemen, as it's manned by the US Navy.

Funny. In all the times we visited Boston, I don't think the Aquarium was a destination for us. Not sure why.

I've been to aquariums across the country, and Boston's is one of the nicest. Next time you go, do yourself a favor and check it out.
