I assume that violent fucked up shit has happened since mankind first picked up rocks...

But now we get super fucked up shit reported/posted the sec it happens for the world to see

Yet everyone I know remembers being able to ride their bikes to the park, play ball after dark outside

without the fear parents have these days....

Maybe it was better not knowing the gruesome shit that occurs on a daily basis, when all we had to fear was
that one creepy dude that lived in that one house that all the kids avoided...??

Throw in social media too where someone could post a picture of a kid eating an ice cream bar on a summer day and twenty butthurt groups would find a reason to protest it.

It's not any worse. It's the perception the media has put in your head.

Imagine if we had CNN and social media during the black plague, the fall of Rome or the Muslims overrunning Europe the first time.

The media hasn't put shit in my head. It's worse. There's more murders, more rapes more robberies, more pollution, more trees being cut down. Why? Cause there's more humans taking part in these acts. Sure people aren't worse, there's just more of us.

When the Nazis invaded the Ukraine, they quickly rounded up huge numbers of Soviet troops.

They pulled the Jews, the Communists and others from the ranks, and had them dig holes in groups of 10. They'd shoot the first ten, then pick another ten men to fill in the holes, dig another hole, and then things would repeat.

They did this until hundreds of thousands of troops were dead after being shot in the head.

Imagine having to wait your turn to dig that hole.

Good question. In the final analysis, I think it ends up being a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, you could arguably say that, for a nation like ours, the quality of life from top to bottom has never been better.

On the other hand, you get the feeling that the productive members of society have never been squeezed tighter than they are today. Gone seem to be the days when you could be reasonably competent and responsible at your job and enjoy a long, stable career at one company. Ditto with the ever increasing need to have both parents working to make ends meet. I don't know if it's a consequence of globalization or merely our insatiable desire to have more toys, but we seem to be immersed in a world where hustling and scrambling is the order of the day.

The percentage of bad people hasn't changed. Pedos were in no lower numbers when we were kids. Parents have gotten worse. Helmets to ride bikes, not allowed to go to a friend's house down the street without an escort...forget about going to parks alone. We had an exchange student from Germany. She was 16 when she came here and was like we were when we were kids. She told us how she and her friend would take the train 45 minutes away to another city to shop when she was 14. She always took city busses to school all by herself. She came here and said that her peers in school were like babies.

As a foster parent, I'm forced to be an over the top parent. It sucks. I want to teach kids to be independent. No wonder our young people can't make decisions. They've never been allowed to. They've had training wheels on their entire lives and certainly haven't been allowed to fail anything.

And most of the rest were starved and worked to death.

Life for the WORLD is better today than in the past. Life in the US, more of a mixed bag. Certainly more coarse of a society, and more crowded. I never saw a traffic jam till I was in my 20's. And this includes going into Atlanta to see Falcons games.

I used to play outside till midnight when I was 12 or 13. If I had kids today I wouldn't let them stay out past 9. Especially at that age.
