There has been a crime- and my dog reeks of guilt.

A small animal suffered and perhaps died, but not before giving my dog a dose of something putrid and persistent.

He came in from outside the other night and as he flew past me I smelled something funny. It wasn't until he was IN the house that I realized it was the most horrific thing I had ever smelled.

It's possible that it's VERY direct skunk spray. It's also been suggested that whatever he caught/grappled with had its gall bladder ruptured. Whatever it is, it's been a foul ordeal.

After I noticed the smell, I noticed the blood on his nose and face. He also had a swollen lip.

I would have hosed him off outside right away, but it's freezing cold. And I wanted to avoid bringing him through the house and up to my tub. SO I put him in the mud room (enclosed back porch) and scrubbed him with soapy water and vinegar. It didn't work.

The next morning we made this concoction, as recommended:

...peroxide, baking soda and dish soap.

    It did not work.

The culprit was very cooperative in the tub at least, as we tried hopelessly to remove the stench.

So yesterday morning, after our failed attempt at de-stenching I went to the back yard to investigate.

There was evidence of a struggle...

It should also be pointed out that the dog had blood on his face and a swollen lip. I thought for sure he'd killed something, but there was no body.

    Witnesses were uncooperative...

    Possible accomplice?
