If I don't properly secure my swimming pool and some kids drown in it, I can be held civilly liable and if the my negligence in egregious, I could possibly held criminally culpable.

Should gun owners be held to any standard when it comes to securing their weapons>

If only we had "common sense" gun laws like universal background checks.

I honestly don't know. The story about the 8 year old being shot by the 11 year old and this one, just made me think about civil and criminal liability for gun owners.

I know some Sandy Hook parents are suing the estate of Lanza's mother, I think their case is hinging on his mental illness and not securing the guns.

I'm looking at carelessness, if you leave a gun in an unlocked car, or a kid gets their hands on it, does that rise to criminal conduct. "Wanton and reckless"

    It sure should.

Those rules regarding pool fences really piss me off. Stay the fuck out of strangers' pools! What's next, fencing the ocean?

I think if they can prove knowing negligence on the gun owner they could nail him
But they would need proof they he had been warned or was aware he was negligent with the gun

This is so crazy, you get high for a little bit and do something like this and now your gonna be behind bars for the rest of your life.
    What a waste

That IS negligence. A car is not an acceptable way to safeguard a weapon.

you're a gun advocate, should a person like this, who left a gun in an unlocked car be criminally liable for the deaths in some way? It's certainly reasonably foreseeable that the gun could be stolen

The gun was apparently in a locked box in the unlocked car

I think anyone who leaves anything valuable in a car, locked or not, should have their head kicked in.
