A baby momentarily neglected by her parents during a day out at the beach has been rescued by the Turkish coast guard after she drifted more than 1km off-shore.

Melda Ilgin, reportedly ten months old, had been placed in a bright yellow flotation device, which was apparently caught in an outgoing current while her parents were settling on the beach in Canakkale, according to various reports.

Upon realising that their baby daughter was not where they left her, and was in fact making her way at a sharp pace toward the Isle of Lesbos, the coast guard was dispatched to retrieve the infant.

Video of the incident shows the rescue, which occurred about a kilometre out to sea.

One man jumps into the water and pulls the girl out safe and sound.

Seemingly unperturbed, pictures show baby Melda being offered a glass of water by her mother; the family then swiftly left the beach.

She was drifting off to the Isle Of Lesbos, maybe she was a Rosie O'Donnell fan.

This happened to me once, but I was 21 years old. Fell asleep on a raft at Nag's Head. A current took me at least a mile out into the ocean. It took hours to swim back. I was spent.

As far as not keeping track of an infant....well that's just stupid.
