Growing up TV was a wasteland but there were always good movies in 70's, 80's & 90's. Now? I see very few great movies. Argo won Oscar and bored me to sleep. I'm usually disappointed when I go to a movie.

So many good TV shows the past decade: Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Fargo, Game of Thrones, South Park, the Office, Boardwalk Empire, True Detective, etc. I'd rather see a True Detective episode for the fifth time than the current box office favorites. I wonder why the big change in quality in both mediums?

I think TV has always been better for comedy. the format just makes more sense to me. Seinfeld and Simpsons re-runs are still better than any comedy movies to me. Movies were much better for drama and action but now with stuff like Breaking Bad and The Wire TV is catching up there as well

TV doesn't pay (at least at first). They can take risks.

Movies cost too much to make and distribute. They (mostly) play it safe.

Also, as long as this is on the air...

I just activate HBO for a few days and knock off ten episodes ofTrue Detective or Game of Thrones via On Demand in a weekend. With the deactivation fee and prorated $10 monthly charge for 3 days, it only costs around 5 or 6 bucks to watch ten episodes which are individually all better than American Hustle or Wolf of Wall Street for half the money. And I didn't drop 6 bucks on shitty popcorn.

Couchtuner.com is free and legal. I read more than watch television but there are a lot of great shows out.

I just re-upped Netflix after taking about a year off. Found FOUR movies I could even stand trying that I haven't already seen.

I feel like pulling an O'Reilly.

Also, the fact that many movie stars cost millions plus part of the gross just to get the movie done (and these days they need big names to draw an opening crowd). A lot of that money is better used for show content, a good script, etc (the HOward Stern effect - spend 100 mil on H's wage and the show content suffers). Cost of production is probably down as well. Plus, many of the true actors are deciding to go back to TV working for lower wages because the idea or script is great.

More freedom with the extended running times that allow plot-lines & character development.
Movies have sucked since the early 1950s, mostly.

TV is ok, breaking bad is great, but Movie are down right horrible. I thought I was turning into a cranky old man saying "back in my day, movies were well written and were funny" but then I read an article saying Pulp fiction, Jurassic park, ShawshankRedemption, Forest Gump, & Lion King were all in the movie theater at the same time.

I think that TV is now able to story tell on a grander scale than movies. You will always have big budget masterpieces that you can't do on TV, but honestly, most book adaptions in movies have barely scratched the surface of the detail that you can do in movies (IE Red Dragon vs. Hannibal)

Right now we are living in a time for television that is incredible....and there are ways to see every show on TV for free if you know things.

studios put most of their money into monster, super-hero, and sci-fi epics. the rest goes to low budget/high return found footage ghost movies, horror remakes, and rom-coms.

if you want real drama, real writing, real grit, real creativity, and a chance to ACT, you go to TV.

Ray Donovan is excellent. Just wish the annoying kids and wife would get in a fatal car crash.
