Next week's Republican presidential debate in Salt Lake City, Utah was cancelled Wednesday after Donald Trump said he likely would not attend, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee confirmed to NBC News.

Trump told debate host Fox News that he did not know about the planned showdown Monday and had another event scheduled.

"I think we've had enough debates," Trump said on Fox & Friends Wednesday, adding that he is "making a major speech in front of a very important group of people."

Trump later said he is addressing the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee and cannot make what would be the 13th GOP showdown.

A spokesman for John Kasich said the Ohio governor would also skip the debate if it did not include Trump.

"This morning, Donald Trump announced he would not be participating in the debate. Shortly afterward, John Kasich's campaign announced that without Trump at the debate, Kasich would not participate. Ted Cruz has expressed a willingness to debate Trump or Kasich -- or both," Fox News said in a statement. "But obviously, there needs to be more than one participant. So the Salt Lake City debate is cancelled."

No Trump, no ratings, Kasich would have to debate Cruz? I'd watch, briefly..

the guy is a genius. (at least compared to who's running the show)

when you are winning a football game, you don't run more plays.
he has nothing to gain by throwing 6 TDs, and everything to lose if he fumbles.
i'm just surprised they let him get away with everything.

What's left to debate? I don't remember a primary season with so many debates, for the republicans or the democrats.

I love it. He's making it out that the other candidates are irrelevant at this point.

Kasich is making a mistake by skipping the event.

He needs as much air time as he can get.

Of course, no one will watch if The Donald is not there.

Didn't the FNC debate he skipped do pretty well? I think you're right, this is a mistake by Kasich.

I'm not sure which debate you're talking about that he skipped but, if it was earlier on, there would have been several more candidates so, it was still a race.

It was right before Iowa. So end of January / beg of February I think. He skipped because of Megyn Kelly.

Trump is disrupting the status quo. If he can do this in Washington = Winning.

    Oh yeah.

By the way, he went on another childish Twitter rant about Megyn Kelly last night.

It's that kind of stuff that makes me take pause and think about what kind of leader of the free world that he will be.

20 people on stage taking turns reciting their 60 second prepared bit was not a debate.
the last debate with only 4 was the first one of any substance. the real debating was just about to begin.

The only debate anyone wants to see is Trump vs Hillary. I can't wait to see him swing away at incontinent grandma.

That's one of the reasons why I voted for Kasich yesterday. I'm going to be hard pressed to vote for Trump if he ends up being the GOP candidate and I dislike Hillary, so it looks like I may skip the next election.

Which may be why he's skipping it.

He may have to give specifics on his positions.
