Gee, what a surprise. He won 4.5% of the vote in Iowa and is polling at 2% in New Hampshire. He will run for re-election for his seat in the U.S. Senate.

Rand Paul Suspends 2016 Presidential Campaign
    By MERIDITH MCGRAW
    Feb 3, 2016, 8:59 AM EST

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said today he is suspending his 2016 campaign for president.

"It's been an incredible honor to run a principled campaign for the White House," Paul said in a statement. "Today, I will end where I began, ready and willing to fight for the cause of liberty.

Paul finished fifth in Monday's Iowa caucuses with 4.5 percent of the vote, behind rivals Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Ben Carson.

Paul campaigned on defending liberty and shrinking the federal government’s influence in the United States and abroad. Paul was seen as a possible mainstream libertarian alternative to his father, the former Texas congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Since announcing his candidacy on April 7, 2015, in Louisville, Kentucky, Paul was unsuccessful in breaking single digits in national polls.

The man who was dubbed “The Most Interesting Man in Politics” by Time magazine in 2014 wasn’t able to capture the electorate’s attention, even in states like New Hampshire where his libertarian positions have broader appeal.

Now that the chaff has been sorted out I'm going to have a hard time choosing between the pant-suit wearing serial miscreant or the creamsicle colored reality T.V star.

Still no word from Former VA. Governor Jim Gilmore. His 12 votes in Iowa may just carry him to the nomination!

Twelve People Voted For Jim Gilmore. Here’s One of Them.
    by Sam Reisman | 9:10 pm, February 2nd, 2016

Jim Gilmore, the former Virginia governor who many forgot was even running for president, emerged from the Iowa Republican caucus with a grand total of 12 votes. That’s fewer than the number of votes Iowans cast for “Other.” And the second-to-last candidate, Rick Santorum, has almost 150 times as many votes.

Huffington Post tracked down one of the 12 individuals to cast their vote for Gilmore: Troy Bishop of Des Moines, who not only voted for Gilmore; he “did everything he could to build momentum for Gilmore’s campaign in Iowa. He found him a hotel room in Des Moines for last week’s GOP debate. He chauffeured him around town. He talked to his friends and family about why they should support him,” HuffPo writes.

As it happens, Bishop is pleasantly surprised by Gilmore’s showing. “I mean, look at some of the other candidates,” Bishop said. “Look at the money they spent. They got 3,000 votes. He didn’t spend any money and got 12.”

Gilmore told Buzzfeed that he was also pleased with the results, since he “chose strategically not to participate in Iowa.”

And, yes, he’s still in the race.

A little under a decade ago, I worked on a Senate committee that Santorum was on. It was a lame duck session and he had already lost his election.

Once hearings got going, I was often the only person in anteroom. About 45 minutes in to one, Santorum walked out of the hearing room, groaned, looked at me and said "That was the most mind-numbing experience of my life." With that, he walked out and was never seen in the committee again.

I was only 24 at the time and remember thinking "WTF just happened."

The Republicans are down to noine candidates. Hopefully, this time next week, we are down to 3 or 4. My guess is that Trump, Cruz, Rubio stick around for the South Carolina primary on 2/20. Maybe Christie or Kasich does well enough in New Hampshire and stays in the race.

    • Current Governors: Christie, Kasich
    • Former Governors: Bush, Gilmore
    • Current US Senators: Cruz, Rubio
    • Outsiders: Trump, Carson, Fiorina

Rand Paul's type will never win the big one. He doesn't tow the party line on endless wars and policing the world, but he's for more personal liberty, so he appeals to neither mainstream party or their indoctrinated voters. And I suspect some of his "positions" were born of political expediency rather than thought, but most of those are unimportant to all but a few.

The process always weeds out anyone who isn't the same old same old in the Republican party. Business as usual is the preferred goal of both parties. The other issues are there to divert attention from the important ones.
