Okay, so this really isn't HS related, but I justify putting it in this forum because Howard talks about his fucking Apple products all the time.

I upgraded my Dell i7 Win7 Pro machine this morning to Win8 Pro. MS charged me only $15 to do it. The install actually went very well, but the "live tiles" in the new UI wouldn't fucking work. I spent nearly 3 MOTHER FUCKING HOURS with Habib from India remotely controlling my computer trying to fix the problem. He was certain it was the video drivers (it wasn't). I finally kicked him off my computer because I had to leave. When I got home 5 hours later, Google found the answer...Avast Anti-Virus was blocking the fuckers from working. Howard would never stand for this!

To answer some looming questions...yes, I closed out all porn in my browser before I let Habib log in. Other than my problem with the tiles, Windows 8 seems very stable, but also very weird...you jump back and forth between those fucking tiles (aka Metro UI, or Windows 8 UI) and the old desktop you're familiar with. The only reason I decided to upgrade today was because I got it for $15. I think the going rate for the upgrade is around $40. All my apps seem compatible so I guess I'm glad I got it over with....

    Thanks for the info.

I've found Avast! to do that on a few programs. Never on my OS though.

I'm gonna stick with Windows 7 for a few more years. I just got it in 2009 and I'd been using XP since 2001, so its too soon for Windows 8.

    Prost! :coffee:

Fuck man, I'm not even sure what I'm talking about.

If anybody wants to ask questions about Win8, maybe I can answer them. It's definitely got a learning curve.

Howard would never upgrade to Windows 8 because he just about learned the upgrade process for a Mac: pay $19, download the new OS, double click the icon to start the upgrade and then take a nap. about 45 min to an hour later it's done.

I love Win 7; I never had a problem with it. Ultimately XP was good, but it took 3 service packs to get it there.

Windows 8 seems to be a very odd hybrid...you literally jump back and forth from the old desktop environment back to those tiles. Right now, while I type this in my browser, I'm on my old desktop which also contains all the files and shortcuts I had previously. But the START icon is missing; you have to jump into the Metro UI (tile menu) to pull up any app that's not pinned to your old UI taskbar. And as far as I can tell you can't pin a file to the new UI start menu. I have a spreadsheet that I edit daily, so on Windows 7 I just pinned it to my START menu. Since Windows 8 doesn't seem to support this in the new UI, I've had to create a shortcut to the file and pin it to the classic UI's taskbar for quick access.

The "app store" on Windows 8 seems ill-conceived for a desktop/laptop environment. Sure they have "apps" in there, but why would I want an AccuWeather app when I can just pull it up in a browser? I don't know why/how that will catch on with computers (as opposed to tablets/smartphones).

Pretty funny that a lot of the "Apple sucks" crowd still uses an OS that's a decade old. LOL

I never get any. Ever. I'm no MS fanboy, but since I bought my laptop with Windows 7 two years ago, I have had zero problems. Chrome was wonky for a bit, but that was unrelated.

Years ago I bought my mom a PC with Vista. I had to go over and kind of teach her how to use it. Vista was a fucking nightmare. At one point I got so frustrated that I punched the desk and yelled, "Motherfucker fuck cunt faggot! Bull-fucking-shit!!" I never cursed in front on my mom, but that's what she heard after ten minutes of showing her how to upload pics from her digital camera. Vista fucked up every chance I gave it.

I'm so glad I bought my last laptop after 7 shipped. If I had bought a laptop with Vista, I would have jumped ship and went over to Apple. Vista really was total shit.

*hint* real computers cant have viruses. Its technically impossible.
    =
antivirus is not necessary. Saves hassle and CPU time.

No defragmentation either. (Its strange that real computers solved this 40+ years ago)
    But
Wonder if MSFT own antivirus works in Win8. My Kapersky ran out and antivirus software is real hard to find pirated. (most of them have viruses).
