    ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts.
    A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products — carries elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health disorders.

    Been a vegetarian for 25+ years, I'm healthier than almost all of my meat-eating family. :coffee:
    Never sick, perfect cholesterols, BP, I'm fit, no diabeetus or respiratory issues, etc. The only thing that has really changed (other than my weight when I was younger) is that I bruise a little easier when I whack into stuff at work. :bigcry:


    I didn't become a veggie because of any moral BS, I just decided one day that I didn't like the taste of steaks and burger anymore. :dontknow:

    Isn't there a common vitamin deficiency among vegetarians? What is it? B12? :scratch:

    Yeah, I know B12 and Iron are "main deficiencies" (certainly low iron explains my bruising issues). Probably omega, too, since I don't eat fish. I try to protein and healthy-fat up by eating nuts, tho.

    I work nights, too, my GP tells me that will kill me before my diet will, especially when connected to women and breast cancer. :hide:

    I never pay any attention to diet studies. One week eggs are bad for you, the next they are really good for you. I remember a story not to long ago warning people about the dangers of drinking water! In my so humble opinion these stories are written as red meat for the folks who believe in that point of view and a reason to bitch to those who appose it.

    I am pretty sure moderation is the key when it comes to eating shit food. Drinking 2 liters of soda a day isnt going to do ya any good, drinking a can of soda once or twice a week aint going to kill ya. Just like going crazy and eating a whole fucking pizza is going to make you shit like crazy the next day or two. But if you chill out and eat go back to eating reasonably your body will forget about that pizza in a couple days.


    Studies that say you should always or never eat just this or only that are fucked. Again, in my oh so humble opinion.

    I've been vegetarian for 20 years. I'm fit and healthy.
    I'm on my phone , so not looking at the details of this study.
    Exactly how did these geniuses reach the opposite conclusion to every other study ever done?

    By the way, Robins not a vegan...I'bet everything I have on that. That said, it's more difficult to be heathy for a vegan than it is for a vegetarian. Vegetarian's no big deal.

    A proper, well rounded diet without too much meat and shitty food is really all people need to do.
    The problem is, most people are kids in adult bodies and love their yumyum fast food and hate the yucky vegetables.
    Parents fault.
