The reason I ask is because my next door neighbor is a former Viet Nam era Colonel. He must be in his 70s and he was talking about the champ calling him a draft dodger and he was disgusted that The Champ had 9 kids with more than one woman. He really didn't like Muhammad.

I know there are probably not many Viet Nam era vets on here but I'm interested in the perspective of anyone who has served his or her country.

BTW, my neighbor is a pretty bad racist. On top of that, he's crazy so I have reason to believe that his opinion is not typical.

I'm assuming that there are no vets logged in right now. No way it could just be a shit thread.

He didn't dodge shit. He stood his ground and faced the consequences. He paid the price and he didn't flee the country.

Fuck the Vietnam war. My heart goes out to anyone who got drafted and went, but what purpose did the US have being there in the first place? Were the Viet Cong threatening America? Was your liberty under fire? Ali was 100% right to tell the government to go fuck themselves.

Hey bb. I marched against the war. I did not want to be drafted, and fortunately, got a high #. My dad took a bullet to the head in WW 2 and barely made it. This was the mind set I grew up with.

The Ali issue is not black/white (no pun). He was one of 10,000's of guys, but stands out because of who he was.

Would the 40,000 + dead like another chance to make the decision to fight or not fight? What would their parents say today, about whether they wished there sons had gone or not - to fight in Vietnam, where we played chess with Russia/China and lost all those boys - nothing changed except the filling of graveyards. And now Americans can go on a boat cruise down the Mekong River.
