VW Recalls 680,000 Cars in U.S. Over Airbag Problems

Volkswagen said on Wednesday it was recalling 680,000 cars of its namesake brand in the United States because Takata-made airbags in them could be defective.

The recall affects models built between 2006 and 2014, a spokesman said, declining to comment on how much the recall could cost.

Daimler said late on Tuesday it would recall 840,000 U.S. vehicles with Takata airbag inflators that could be defective, resulting in a charge of 340 million euros ($382.53 million) for the carmaker.

My 2005 Dodge got recalled too, and they changed out the driver airbag.

Wow, VW is a little late to the Takata airbag recall party.

I'm scared you're right. They're probably going to be buying back all 2009-2014 Diesel cars in the next few months. I'll be bummed if they want my TDI back. I love this car.

Me too. I love mine. I wouldn't sell it back. Just finished paying for it.

The only bright side is it looks like they are going to make it worth our while to give them back. I'm expecting either MSRP or 150% of Blue Book value pre scandal. Anything less they can shove up their German keisters.

If I can walk away with a new GTI Golf with little or nothing out of pocket I can't be too mad until I realize I can no longer go 600 miles between fill ups.

What are you getting for MPG? I've never had so much fun trying to hypermile.

I've got a 2010 GTI so I did more research...

Here's a great link describing what the problem is, and updates on the vehicles covered:
    http://blog.caranddriver.com/massiv...now-including-full-list-of-affected-vehicles/

For VW, here's the list - so I guess my GTI would fall under 'Golf'... that sucks.
    Volkswagen (680,000): 2006–2010, 2012–2014 Passat; 2009–2014 CC; 2010–2014 Jetta SportWagen and Golf; 2012–2014 Eos; 2015 Tiguan

I drive a little fast so I am generally low 40s. But when I drive around 60 I get 45+ mpg.

One time I drove to western Pennsylvania and back and set the cruise control to 58 just to see how I would do and got just under 50 mpg (675 for the tank before refueling). My wife gets around 50 in her Prius but the TDI is a real car with great torque and thick, heavy tires. The Prius feels like a go-cart in comparison and it rattles like crap. Today I bought diesel for 1.89 a gallon so I'm in no hurry to give it up.

Unless there is some legal reason, maybe the feds say you have to sell it back, there is no reason you have to sell.

    and Honda
    http://wwntradio.com/2016/02/10/recall-alert-more-hondas-affected-by-defective-airbags.html
The recall brings to 8.51 million the number of Honda and Acura vehicles recalled in the US for Takata inflator problems. All of them have potentially defective Takata front airbag inflators - some on the driver's side, some on the passenger side and some on both. Honda said it was aware of two injuries linked to the problem

We have a Passat tdi....great car. Wondering if the coming change will take all the torque and power from the car. Take mpg away leave the car driving like it does imo.

I don't want to let them reduce torque or mileage so my plan is to ignore any recall notices. I expect it will still pass inspection.

I had a TDI. Some exhaust sensor failed, and in the time it took the shop to get the part and get me in, the DPF also failed. Ended up replacing everything from the turbo back, cost 2,000. VW and the dealer ate the cost, and I traded it in the next week.

Loved the torque. Fun little car. DSG transmission was snappy.
