Wage Hikes Bring Kiosks to Wendy’s:

Being replaced by machines is probably not what the Raise the Wage! crowd had in mind, but here we are. Again.

For almost two years, McDonald’s has been flirting with automated ordering machines, and has introduced the new mechanical overlords to some of its locations.

Now, fast-food chain Wendy’s is experimenting with automated ordering kiosks. The driving force behind technological expansion? Wage inflation.

The fast food industry isn’t the only one to feel the pinch of increased labor costs. Recently, UC Berkeley put 500 jobs on the chopping block ahead of California’s $15 an hour minimum wage increase.

Those fast food places are already way over priced. Maybe I'm getting old but weren't they 3-5 dollars for a big burger, fries and a drink a decade ago? I don't really eat at those places anymore though.

Just as recently as a few weeks ago you could get 2 quarter pounders w/ cheese for $5. Good deal.

This would have happened in due time, the wage increase just helped with a speedy implementation.

At a typical fast food joint how many of the people working at any given time are taking orders and taking payments? A 1/4 or 1/3 maybe? There is always a lot of people in the back and upfront running around putting orders together. I know a few years ago McDonald's stores in were having their drive-thru orders being taken by people in a call center no where near the restaurants.

    Good luck with this.

A significant number of people can't even figure out how to work the new Coke machines, much less an ordering kiosk.

There will have to be people staffed to coach customers through ordering on the kiosks

Don't have to worry any more if the employees wash there hands after using the shit house. Here come the machines and I bet you can understand them when they take your order.

it has nothing to do with wage hikes.
if they coulda make more profit using robots, every store would already be using them, regardless of what min wage was/is.
    the tech existed for decades.

also, trump will sign a min wage hike bill within his first 2 years.
