Big news story in our area... DC government begs Wal Mart to open stores in the District to bring jobs and low cost goods to low income neighborhoods. Wal Mart agrees to open 5 stores. During construction of 3 stores DC Govt. creates a bill requiring 'Big Box Stores' including Wal Mart to pay employees a minimum of $12.50 an hour. Wal Mart claims if the bill passes they will pull out of the 5 stores in DC.

"living wage" Bill passed yesterday...Wal Mart has already sent out a statement that they are gone unless the Mayor uses his veto power on the bill  :emperor:

    Walmart gives jobs to veterans.

whether or not you like/hate Wal Mart do you think the Govt. should be able to choose which businesses have to pay $12.50 an hour while other places can still pay minimum wage?

Wal-Mart: "Pay people a decent wage?? FUCK THAT!!!! We'd rather flush millions down the toilet then let our employees have decent wages!"

I don't think it's fair that soda companies charge wal-mart half of what they charge mom and pop stores, but they do. Even the tables. It would make those jobs more desirable. You see the people that work in that shithole?

I believe they give full time jobs and vets have the first opportunity. Who knows. Someone told me this, I never read the news.

Has anyone really believed that living on minimum wage was possible? If not why do people still work those jobs anyways?

I still like the Chris Rock line, being on minimum wage means I'd pay you less if I could

They and other companies tout how they are all hiring veterans but they do that because they don't have to pay for their health insurance. Plus, you will start hearing about how all of these big companies are hiring but they are only hiring part time or temporary. It's all bullshit.

They hire veterans! Sure, for $17,000/year.
