I always thought she had a good voice but her 'look at me' personality turned me off. In this performance of the Sound of Music at this year's Oscars, she proves she has the chops equal to some of the greats. I hope she drops the avant garde schtick and goes legitimate now. She did record an album with Tony Bennett recently too. I'm going to have to give that a listen.

And yes I agree that her performance was very impressive. The only thing I didn't like was the tattoos on the insides of both her arms. Slightly distracting from the power of the moment. I don't have anything against tattoos per se, but during a performance like that she should have worn long sleeves.

The state of music 2015: a multiplatinum recording artist shocks the world when she reveals she has actual singing ability.

I totally agree but I was trying to keep an open mind about it. She has really nice skin and I hate to see it wrecked by tats with little artistic merit.

What you are really saying is that she exposed herself to a huge untapped market of people that dismissed her because of her showmanship.

This has always been my prediction and observation for Lady Gaga's career; I said this years ago--her career is going to take a trajectory much like the one of Elton John's, because they are very similar. He did not choose her to be a godparent by mere chance; he respects and values her and what she can contribute. She is going to be around for years and years, always evolving into something richer. Both of them were overshadowed in their early careers by the focus on their outlandish modes of dress/costumes. But if you heard her "unplugged" performances on Howard, you immediately recognized the depth of her overall musical training and how far that was going to take her. As she sheds that image, people will begin to appreciate her more. I think eventually she will expand to movie soundtracks and Broadway musicals on the scale of Elton John's collaborations with Tim Rice ("Aida")

I'm not disagreeing with you but, early in Elton's career, say "Madman across the Water" and "Tumbleweed Connection," he enjoyed great popularity without the outlandish stuff. He didn't really become a superstar until "Honky Chateau," when he started wearing weird hats. It kind of skyrocketed from there. He was very respected early in his career.
