Since Drudge reported it, I would have given them 1.2 billion.

The $400 million was Iran's own assets unfrozen.

"Iran had set up a $400 million trust fund for such purchases, which was frozen along with diplomatic relations in 1979. In settling the claim, which had been tied up at the Hague Tribunal since 1981, the U.S. is returning the money in the fund along with "a roughly $1.3 billion compromise on the interest," the statement said."

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/17/politics/us-pays-iran-1-7-billion/

    "
The settlement comes as the U.S. is unfreezing a much larger pool of Iranian assets, estimated at between $100-$150 billion, as part of the nuclear deal.
While U.S. officials say Iran will only pocket about $50 billion of those assets after legal claims, the announcement of this new settlement could add fuel to the fire for critics who say the U.S. is funding a destructive regime.
Administration officials dismissed that notion, suggesting U.S. taxpayers might have faced a much larger payout if the case hadn't been settled between the parties.
The announcement of this action comes as the U.S. is imposing new sanction on Iran over ballistic missile testing, and just one day after a deal was announced to exchange four imprisoned American citizens for seven Iranians in U.S. detention."

I have a frozen asset that spent the last 2 days in the fridge and still aint thawed. I was really looking forward to grilling up a boneless turkey breast, too. I had to throw the sumbitch back in the freezer, cause I aint going to have the free time to grill it any other day this week.

If Iran knows that they can get a lot of money in exchange for Americans, won't they just take more?

ISIS is Sunni Muslims, right? I hope Iran takes this money and buys some arms to wage war on them. The Middle East is much better when they are all killing each other, and not worrying about the non desert world.

It was delivered on pallets, in cash. Swiss Francs and Euros. They tried to run out the obvious fiction that US law prohibiting payments in dollars to Iran was the reason. If that was the case, there would be nothing to prevent them from cutting a check in dollars to a European bank, who would then convert it to their currency and wire the money in Euros or Francs to Iran. No risky air flights into a nation that had just kidnapped a dozen or so of your people. So, you have to ask "why cash?".

My guess is probably because they want something untraceable to hand out. Like for funding terrorism. Or the negotiators wanted to grab a pallet or two for themselves. "a taste".
