Art is very subjective whether it is good or not, usually when rich people pay this much they are paying for some big name artist, if a 9 year old made the exact same thing it would be worthless.

Funnily, this morning I just read a story about how high-priced art is a great great way to launder money. My guess is a lot the stuff that sells is some kinda fraud. Some art is genuinely amazing but not worth millions of dollars though.

‘[The Rain Painting] plays into this idea of relationships – relationships between people and relationships between objects... The Rain Paintings in my head serve as backdrops for situations between people and/or objects, very much like backdrops in a play. They become activated when something is placed in front of them; only then do their scale and size come in to effect’

REGARDING THE ABOVE ART: most of that is colorfield. which is actually decent but not worth millions obvs. Rothko is up there.

Anyways, the thing about really rich people is that they literally CANNOT SPEND all their money. It comes in faster then they can buy shit. It is hard to believe for many people but you can only occupy as much physical space as your body is formed no matter how many houses and cars you have. Drug dealers buy houses to stack money to ceilings because they can't find a place for it.

Art serves a large laundering market for millionaires+ easily moved about country to country. Most would like to horde gold but that is actually pretty hard to buy no matter how much money you have.

Art is a lot like Bitcoin for really rich people. No trace of the transaction by the countries' governments.

EDIT: and most of these "art purchases" never go to auction.

No different than someone paying millions for a rectangular cut if a cardboard with an old baseball players picture glued on the front

I dated an art professor a few years back. She was such a pig...but that really has nothing to do with the story.
She would take me to art galleries all the time and I was constantly amazed at the shit people would by.
There was one 'collection' that consisted of 7 8x8 canvases, each one painted a color in the rainbow. The collection was hung on the wall and people were losing their shit over it. You could only buy the entire collection together and it was priced at 55,000 dollars.
55k to slap one color on a canvas.
    Fucking bullshit.
