Howard related because money. Gotta buy wood for those fireplaces, aight..?

When you're asked to provide an hourly wage, what do you say? When I work backwards from what I need to cover expenses for a month, I'm shocked at the figure, you know, four weeks at forty hours and it's HOW much an hour? I have an ancient concept of money and it trips me up sometimes, like now, when I could stand the job but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot lowballing... and at the same time, I don't want to ask for so much money that I don't get it...

you should ask for what your time is worth, not what your bills require. if you don't know what your time is worth, you probably don't have much to offer. you're kinda going at this ass-backwards. like most of the younger generations today, do you feel you're entitled to a certain standard of living, regardless of your ability?

Your cost of living should have nothing to do with how much you charge. What does the market bear for your skills? What are the comparables? How do your skills compare? If you can only flip burgers, you'll make less than the cost of living. If you can do something that can scale, help others make alot of money (or keep them healthy or out of jail), you'll do better.

When I build models for my clients we always use 2000 hours as an average work year. So, as an example, if people in your field earn about $50,000 a year then you would charge $25 an hour. Now..... that assumes full time work, so to compensate for down time, illness, etc, you might want to bump it up.

In addition to teaching, my wife does private tutoring for kids at $100 an hour. It's mostly test prep for kids trying to get into exclusive private schools. Of course that's only a few hours a month, but it's a nice way to build up some vacation money.
