I am a new member who joined the Shed to be with like minded people who USED to be fans of the HSS, but hate the train wreck it has become. To quote Kasey Kasem, the show is now "fuckIng ponderous".

Anyway, since I have been here, I have read a number of threads/posts that mention a declining audience. I certainly can't imagine anyone listening to this radio abortion, and I am sure he has completely alienated long-time listeners. That said, other than anecdotal evidence of an audience decline, what is there to support this contention?

Personally, I hope Sirius drops Howard, but without ratings, how can we be sure there are fewer listeners? Also, are there any projections as to how many people listen?

I'm genuinely curious about all of the foregoing, and I appreciate any info ya'll can give me. Thanks.

have you ever quit Sirius and had them call you 5,000 times trying to get you back? I'd say thats a good indication of declining audience.

Sirius can extrapolate ratings from the web data they receive, multiple hosts of other shows have mentioned receiving ratings.

TV is a good indicator as well, the last time he was on Letterman a Leno repeat had higher ratings. The second he stepped on the AGT stage their ratings fell 18% and he was named "Loser of the Summer" by Entertainment Weekly.

...politicians have a rule of thumb although i dont know the exact equation it goes something like this; for every dissenting opinion expressed there are X number of like minded people who didnt call or write in. so take the number of pissed on fans taking the time to expound on it and fill in your own blank, not to mention the group of people who said fuck it from the beginning because they werent going to pay for radio. there had to be at least a million who dropped off because of that.

Sirius has internal surveys and records of on-demand requests I'm sure, but they jealously guard them. The evidence of decline is more circumstantial. Less mention in other media, less deference from celebrities, less general awareness of him in younger generations, anecdotal evidence from talking about the show to others who reveal they no longer listen. Even people from NY look baffled when I ask if they listen. It's usually "I used to". It is reported that he had a reported 12 million listeners on terrestrial but only a claimed 4 million on Sirius, even years back, when the general attitude here towards the show was more positive.

Less money in resulting contracts is generally a sign you're making them less money, not more. The fact his cable PPV show was shitcanned is indicative of lower interest as well. The entire lack of visual element to the show would bode poorly for any sustained interest from those who tuned in for the strippers and porn stars. So one could deduce interest is lower there. The lack of significant positive feedback ANYWHERE on the internet towards the show is more circumstantial evidence the show is in decline. His former well known fan site is a ghost town.

The fact that neither Sirius nor Howard provide proof of a large audience is pretty damning.

Few Sirius XM Subscribers Are Staying for Howard Stern, Survey Shows

Only 5 percent would consider leaving satellite service if he was gone

    Alex Stedman

    News Editor, Variety.com @a_sted

“The Howard Stern Show” was a huge draw for Sirius XM when Stern signed a deal with the then infant subscription radio service nearly a decade ago. Today, however, that may not be the case.
Macquarie Equities Research released the results of the survey Wednesday in which 800 Sirius XM subscribers were questioned in order to quantify the impact of Stern’s presence on the service. The results found that a minority would feel the hurt if they lost their regular dose of Stern.
Of the respondents, only 12 percent reported that they listen to Stern regularly. What’s more, only 5 percent would consider leaving Sirius XM if he was gone, and 95 percent responded that they would not pay extra to keep him.
For Sirius, this could mean there is less of a need to keep Stern when his contract comes up for renewal at the end of 2015. As of their last report, Sirius serves more than 25 million subscribers.

Article is over a year old, if anything the numbers are probably worse now.

I'd take the failure of "In Demand", "On Demand", what-ever-the-fuck TV as another indicator, though I don't know if anyone could make that business model work anymore.

Back in the day I knew a lot of people that listened to Stern, including myself.

After he went to Sirius I knew a few people that listened to Stern, including myself.

Presently I know no people that listen to Stern, including myself.

    There it is scientific evidence.

I tried to get them to go below $48 for 6 months and the guy said sorry and started to begin the process of cancellation.
